"Thousands of people gathered today on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to engage in an eight-hour taxpayer-funded evangelical worship event to “rededicate” the nation to Christianity.

The “Rededicate 250: A National Jubilee of Prayer, Praise & Thanksgiving” event is part of the Trump administration’s attempt to use the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence to rewrite America’s history, turning it from one that champions the Enlightenment values of natural rights, equality, and self-government to one that requires Americans to accept that some people are better than others and to defer to their leaders."

I can so easily picture Jesus saying, "I'm so sick of these goddamn christian nationalists."

The theme of obeying the leader runs deep in Trump’s politics, and in MAGA more generally. The Bible passage Trump read on video today emphasizes obedience, warning the chosen people that if they “forsake my statutes and my commandments, which I have set before you,” then they will be destroyed. Cowboys for Trump founder Couy Griffin read the same passage at the January 6, 2021, insurrection, suggesting that overturning democracy for Trump was obeying the Lord. Laura Jedeed of Firewalled Media reported that vendors at today’s event handed out buttons that said: “WIVES SUBMIT, HUSBANDS LOVE, CHILDREN OBEY.”

The Heritage Foundation built a database to prove voter fraud is a national crisis.

Then their own database showed it isn't. But that's only part of the story. The deeper you look at this organization, the more the picture changes. Here's what my investigation found.

What Heritage actually is

Founded in 1973 with $250,000 from the Coors brewing family, Heritage was explicitly designed from the start to move conservative policy into law faster than traditional think tanks. By 1981 they handed Reagan a 1,093-page governing manual. He implemented nearly 60% of it in his first year. Project 2025 is the ninth edition of that same manual. The machine has been running for 50 years.

Who funds it

Heritage claims to be "the most broadly supported public policy research institute in the nation." Their own IRS filings tell a different story: 96% of their $101 million in 2023 revenue came from organizational contributors, not individual members. Six family fortunes… Coors, Koch, Uihlein, Scaife, Seid, and Bradley, have all funneled more than $120 million into Project 2025 advisory groups since 2020. The man running the funding network behind much of it, Leonard Leo, controls a $1.6 billion dark money operation, the largest known donation in American conservative political history. Heritage's president was paid $953,920 in 2023 to run what is legally classified as a nonprofit.

The voter fraud contradiction

Heritage's own database, which they built, maintain, and publish, documents just fewer than 70 documented cases of noncitizen voting going back to the 1980s. Less than 5% of their total fraud entries. Only 10 involved undocumented immigrants specifically. The Brennan Center reviewed the same database and concluded voter fraud is less common than being struck by lightning.

Heritage's response to their own findings? Back the SAVE Act. Build election restructuring into Project 2025. Draft state voter restriction laws and hand them to legislators.

A 2021 Heritage donor retreat recording captured their approach: "We did it quickly, and we did it quietly. Honestly, nobody noticed."

The Hungary connection 

Heritage president Kevin Roberts has called Viktor Orbán, whose government the EU classifies as an "electoral autocracy", "a very impressive leader" whose work "should be celebrated." In 2023 Heritage signed a formal partnership agreement with the Danube Institute, a think tank funded directly by the Hungarian government. Several people who appeared in Heritage's internal Project 2025 training videos had previously worked with Orbán-linked organizations.

A Princeton scholar who studies Hungarian democracy told NPR: "When I read Project 2025, my first thought was, this sounds so much like what Orbán did."

The tech connection most people missed

Some of the people who wrote Project 2025 weren't former government officials. They were corporate lobbyists. Rick Dearborn, who authored the White House Office chapter, covering how the president's staff should consolidate control, has directly lobbied for Amazon Web Services, Meta Platforms, Shell USA, Citigroup, and Verizon. He is now serving in the Trump administration.

Meta won a landmark antitrust case in 2025. Meta spent a record $19.7 million on federal lobbying in the first nine months of 2025 alone, roughly one lobbyist for every six members of Congress.

Power doesn't always follow ideology. Sometimes it simply goes where the rules are most favorable, and invests in making them that way.

The pattern across all of it

Build the architecture first. Amplify the threat that justifies it. Implement it quickly and quietly. Set aside any research, including your own, that doesn't support the conclusion.

The Powell Memorandum that inspired Heritage's founding in 1971 was written by a corporate lawyer arguing business needed to fight back against regulation. Fifty years later, the document that grew from that impulse was partially written by the lobbyists of the companies that benefit most from deregulation.

The circle is complete.
