What is the meaning behind this brilliant, under-rated song !!!! I have only just got into this song and well - it has just gone right up into my top three which shows how much it means to me i hope you appreciate.

Thanks Guys !!!

  • "[I imagined the song as] a 20-page cardboard (children's) book with a line on each page and a picture to go with it. It's a fable, that's all. The music almost gives you this feeling of flight, and I really love singing the part at the end, which is all about rising above anybody's comments about what you do and still giving your love away. You know ? not becoming bitter and reclusive, not condemning the whole world because of the actions of a few." -Eddie Vedder (Philadelphia Inquirer, February 8, 1998)

Hardly feel that it is under-rated.

But yes, it is an amazing song.

Well, then I say put the pedal to the metal, Eddie Vedder, and write that children's book. I'm not expecting another neice or nephew, but you never know.

Imagine all of the colors, and the freedom of feeling like you're flying. All the negativity could just fade away into faint colors. Or however else he wants it.

Hubby has an itch for another Tat, so I suggested Given to Fly...ha ha we'll see:)
I would love to have it done myself, with a pair of angel wings below it...

Such an emotional song...even EV has had trouble in the past holding back tears while singing it:o

I think I read somewhere this one was originally titled "Given to Die".
  • It's written about Plato's "The Allegory Of The Cave".

http://webspace.ship.edu/cgboer/platoscave.html - looks like a pretty reliable transcript of it..

It's even more brilliant in this context. The song is pretty open ended until you read that and then all of the sudden it hits you and it's like.. "ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh". :)
Come on pilgrim you know he loves you..

I recently studied that story (lightly) in my English class and I don't see any connection really

If you take the general storyline of 'the cave' it's rediculous how closely the story in 'GTF' matches up with it.
