he doesnt physically leave her at all, just sits there beside her but is totally spaced out of it :) - maybe not really a cement floor, but shes on planet earth at least while hes spacing out

the big man standing behind the open door is the person opening the door for him at whatever party or house he's going to i guess..

its probably cliche if it is about drugs but its a not a "drugs are deadly - DO DRUGS" kind of song at least, more thoughtful look at it. the theories about marriage and satan are good too

We agree on the metaphor of the cement floor, but the open door is also metaphor, I think.

Furthermore, as far as hallucinogenics are concerned, I've done my share, and have known plenty of people who have done more than I. Not once have I ever heard of, or experienced a detailed hallucination such as a severed hand ("recognized it by the wedding band") sort of hallucination. Hallucinations while tripping tend to be of the spectral sort, like the walls turning into moving oceans of sand, or the ever-popular light tracers you get from waving a cigarette in front of your face.

I tend to think of the "devil" in this song as primarily a military recruiter.

I've tripped so much, I can't see the trails. I see the cathedralic connectedness of it all, fast and bulbous. I never saw severed hands, either. If you take the right drugs, nothing is severed. All is one. ;)

The Severed Hand is waving you in...come on you, you, you know you want to tell us about the tripping, the war, the peace, the doubt, the peace, the love, the anger...

Addams Family? I was thinking, it was better when you knew The Hand was connected to something. It was more trippy and believable, back in the so-called unreal monochrome early 60s. In the 80s the hand started walking on its own, and you could spot its artifice. We go further out on our own when we're connected to the stuff behind the curtain.

All is one laughing our asses off for hours on end. It's been quite awhile for me. Those were some good times.

You quoted a post I scarcely remember making. Must have been late...

I think I was playing the hand, itself, in that one.

    Q: really? why?
A: it plays the shades of emasculation, and the reckoning of.
    Q: you're a trip.
A: no, really. i think so. Think about it.

This song rocks!! I like it so much, I heard it three times... in Zagreb, Katowice and Munich. I prefer live version, cause on album is too slow for me...just love the part where Eddie sings before I fucking explode...and yeah Mike does great job too in this song....love it!!!
    I just want to scream...
    ...hello!!!
My god its been six years...
    never dreamed...
    ...you'd return.

he he just reading about everyone tripping makes me want to trip..!! God how fun that shit was.. It's been quite a while since I could afford that escape, but oh well. As for the Severed Hand part I almost wonder if that was a personal recollection for him. As if he's saying that partof shit is over..I don't know but I have never taken it to the literal point of assuming that it was a hallucination. Though It could be.. but in all my tripping days, I've neverseen such a lucid hallucination as what you guys have read into that line. I think more than anything like I said it's more metaphoric than literal. As for the big man standing behind an open door.. Some people trip with what they asume are spirit guide, kinda like they don't feel safe enough to trip alone so they create this "person" to trip with in their head.. maybe that's the symbol of the trip's beginning
Just a guess. ok gotta go for a bit bye!!

I always thought it was about tripping on acid....it was clear from the first listen.

I've tripped alot, and have indeed seen some vivid hallucinations of things that simply were not there, so I can see it.
    Boston Garden 5/25/06
    Lollapalooza 8/5/07
Madison Square Garden 6/24/08 and 6/25/08
    Mansfield 6/30/08

actually from what I had gathered I always just it assumed this song got it's life's breath from Ed's experiences tripping on X though I know fro positive he has an affinity towards acid too or did.. So I guess for the moment either answer would work but It's just that the song came out so relatively close to the end of his trips on X. So naturally that's what I'd assume it was about.

    You don't "trip" on X

So, lets go with the premise that temptation is war.

does this make any sense to anyone besides me?

    No.

You have quite an imagination though, I mean you're an interesting cat but I can't see (not that it matters wth I think) what you see...I would need psychotropics I think just to understand where you are coming from.
