i don't know if sad is the accurate word but Black is the one song that always turns my guts inside out when i hear it. it's one of my favourite songs ever but i avoid hearing it (even though i love it to death) because i get so vulnerable i just can't take it... no other song does this to me...

I hear you loud and clear...I tend to avoid this song as much as possible (although the last tag added in Madrid gave me a new view on this song), and it can make me bawl and feel sad for days...no song has touched the depths of my own sadness with such accuracy (and bring it to the surface so readily)...that's quite a talent Ed's got...and Stone too, for writing that beautiful melancholic melody...

5 saddest Pearl Jam songs for me are: Black (of course for the song, but also when pearljam came to a small venue on Maui and Eddie asked the audience what song they should play, I immediately stood up, all dressed in black, and he said no in a teasing, disciplinarian way. It hurt my feelings, because I'm a movie and music industry brat, and I'm used to getting special treatment.
Second song is All or None, I hate how he sings that part about "to myself I surrender, to the one I'll never please." Must've been having a low self-esteem day. Evolution. "Admire me, admire my home, admire my clothes, here's my son." (or something to that effect). How about "Admire my knowledge, admire my discipline and loving, kind heart, admire my ever enduring non-stop work throughout the world. And yes, maybe the creation of man is the theory of Evolution, for now, lets talk about pollution." Man of the Hour. I think is very emotional right now. Parachutes."What went wrong, walking tightropes high...Needing forgiveness first! God what do you say? I'm calling out!Calling out!...Ooooh Kk. Nothingman. "He who forgets, shall be destined to remember." Off He Goes....(Yeah right!!) :-)

Lots of sad/emotional songs but for me 4/20/02 is really sad.. :(:(

    so all you fools
    who sing just like him
feel free to do so now
    cuz he's dead
    using, using, using
    the using takes toll
    isolation
just so happy to be one
    sad to, sad to think
sad to think of him more
    lonesome friend, we all knew
    always hoped you'd pull through
    no blame, no blame
no blame, it could be you
using, you can't grow old using
so sing just like him, fuckers
    it won't offend him
    just me
    because he's dead

All of the aforementioned songs are very sad, beautiful songs. I just wanted to point out the exact point in the song "Sad" that makes my arm hair stand up: "if just one wish could bring her back" comes in from left field and pretty hard; always gets me.

i dunno about saddest but just thinking of "release" chokes me.
a few years ago i had to do an english spoken report titled " someone who makes a difference to an imperfect world". i, of course, chose eddie. ( not to exclude the rest of the guys) i set up early closed the blinds, turned off the lights, hung a noose from the fan and set the stereo to play "release" as my classmates walked in. they all sat down, the mood sombre, quoting things they had all made fun of me about, then proceeded to use the props in the room. as the song reached its crescendo ".... i wait up in the dark...." i looked up and saw three girls crying. i finished my talk, extolling the virtues of how pearl jam had dragged me kicking and screaming out of my hurts, then walked back to my chair. my teacher threw the marking sheet at me, saying" dont you ever do that in my class again" A+.
what do i think is the saddest song from pearl jam?
none of them cos they remind me of different times.... reminds me to be thankful for what i got and what others around have done for me.

god there is so many...but I think Nothingman can take the cake on that one...it's so powerfully dark, when i first heard it i was amazed thinking that Pearl Jam gave off this mood that I never thought I'd see/hear them do.

Aside of nothingman i'd have to say these though:
    come back
    all or none
    man of the hour
    footsteps
    off he goes
    drifting
    other side
    dead man

i think indifference hits a soft spot too.

thats the list i agree with most.

the saddest pearl jam songs to me are -

    release
    daughter
    sleight of hand
    thumbing my way
    off he goes
    man of the hour
    i'm open
    nothingman

and "alone" which supposedly was sung by pearl jam and alice in chains.
I have faced it, A life wasted...

Take my hand, my child of love
    Come step inside my tears
    Swim the magic ocean,
I've been crying all these years

Other Side is the Pearl Jam song that makes me most want to cry. Other tearjerkers for me are:
    Man Of The Hour
    Wishlist
    Black
    Indifference
    Low Light
