  • I don't know why anybody didn't mention "garden" here but I think it is one of the saddest along with black.
Of course "saddest song" is a lot related to the person's state of mind listening PJ but still I believe walking to her garden of stone being so desperate is the worst that can happen to someone...

Lately it's been black. Those last few lines of the song .. .. :(
  • I love that song but I makes me weep.
  • I'd have to put sleight of hand up there. That opening verse just speaks so much to the depression caused by finding yourself falling into a routine, boring life, and realizing your dreams have slipped away.
"Ah, life is a gate, a way, a path to Paradise anyway, why not live for fun and joy and love or some sort of girl by a fireside, why not go to your desire and LAUGH..."
  • I lost my wife to cancer in 1998. She was absolutely the love of my life and it has taken me almost ten years to be able to talk about her without crying.

So, with that in mind, the PJ songs that break me down, in no particular order, are:

    Come Back
    Alone
    Sad
    Black
    Sleight of Hand
    Footsteps
    Indifference
    Oceans
    Wash

I was surprised to find that Come Back made me cry again after all these years, so for me, that is the saddest one right now...

And every time after I listen to several sad ones, I go back and listen to Present Tense - that one gives me perspective and brings me back to now, which makes much more sense.
  • Arc
    Sleight Of Hand
    Nothingman
    Come Back
    Off He Goes
    Black
    Man Of The Hour

if you all will count it:
Hunger Strike (I always think of Andrew Wood during it)
My god its been so long, never dreamed we'd return.
  • Long Road and for some reason I find Release to be sad.
  • Its simply beautiful. My girlfriend broke up with me two weeks before Avacados release so when I first heard this it really hit home hard.

Thumbing My Way is a very close second.

Come Back is the latest PJ song that made me absolutely sob. Black and Release had the same affect before.

    Man of the Hour.
  • Sad........Hence the name. Also is quite possibly my favourite Pearl Jam b-side. It's got such a tasty guitar riff.

    Black is up there too.

only 1 person has metioned "around the bend". I totally agree that black and come back are very sad, but if you listen closely to the lyrics of around the bend it is a very, very dark song. anybody agree?

No, not sad and dark, but I actually think of it more as a lullaby than anything.

I think I read something like this before as well.

But I definately see why Comeback is a popular choice on the thread. It emotion really comes to life live.
Oh he fills it up with the love of a girl...

Definitely "The End". Love that song. The abrupt end to the song always leaves chills

"Come Back" is definitely sad but for me "Off He Goes" is the one that hits oh so close to home. That song has reduced me to tears at least a few times.

    Indifference
Black - For the past few years losing contact with an old friend who had a mutual crush on me, it's hit close to home.
Jeremy - I've been bullied before especially around the time it came out since I was in my pre teens so it hits close to home.

    Come Back - RIP JR.
