Tell me why Jeremy is pearl jam's worst song ?

There's a thread were you can list your favs and least favs from each album. And there are a few people who named Jeremy as worst song...!?! Why? I can't understand it because I love the song and I love it much more since I saw Pearl jam playing it live... so why say it is the worst song?
Beavis : Is this Pearl Jam?
Butt-head: This guy makes faces like Eddie Vedder.
Beavis: No, Eddie Vedder makes faces like this guy.
Butt-head: I heard these guys, like, came first and Pearl Jam ripped them off.
Beavis: No, Pearl Jam came first.
Butt-head: Well, they both suck.

they are crazy. it is not the worst song.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"
  • No, I don't think it is the "worst" song, but it was definately "raped" as the band has said in an interview. Amazing song, and love to hear it live, but it is an average fan song. My husband knows it, my best friend knows it, god...even my mother knows it and her favorite artist is Kenny G! For the true fans like we are....we understand how powerful the song is, but we also see it as a symbol of what Pearl Jam is not about: powerful corp., pleasing the press, allowing public option to direct a band's image. That is why I chose to not like the song.

I agree with the last post. Those who selected this as the worst song was probably thinking in the terms of how overexposed it was, therefore it turned the song into something negative. I feel the band, particularily Ed, had the same sense of the song in terms of everytime he saw his face on TV, he hated that person.

Exactly, the song is great...what it represents is not so much.

It's the same with Alive though, so why not choose that?
Both are great, but too well-known imho

  • yes I understand what you mean but is the quality of a song not more important as the success ( :) ). It is not that Pearl jam wrote this song to please the medias or to make a mainstream song. But maybe I see this from another sight because when the song has been released I was about 10 years old. I was wondering as I saw the video clip 6 years ago, I knew the song from the album but didn't know that it was a mainstream success. I like this powerfull song and live it is even better. But after longer reflections I think that it lost the signification and that now it's more an anthem.

Yea, I think of Alive and Evenflow also fit into this catagory. All three are amazing songs, and all three I will scream at the top of my lungs when I hear them played live. But, would I rather hear: evolution, immortality, in my tree, smile, alone, gone, WWS, etc more.....yep. Jeremy is an anthom, like someone said on here, and for that reason they are awsome. They make you feel nestalgic, and remind you of how you fell in love with pearl jam. They are not bad songs, and they are not the best songs. To dedicated fans such as ourselves, they represent the good and bad of this business. I appreciate thier place in music and pearl jam history, but since 10 there has been amazing stuff written, and hopefully their will continue to be. I love those songs and I hate them....sort of confusing I guess.

Agree, and this is the same reason that the band refused to do a video for "Black" which in many eyes is the greatest PJ song ever.

  • Jeremy is, was, and always will be a FUCKING CLASSIC!!! Sure, there are better songs out there in the Pearl Jam catalog, but if it wasn't for this song, many of us would not be here today...

  • anyone who thinks Jeremy is Pearl Jam's worst song is an idiot and really should stop listening to Pearl Jam and rock music in general.

My daughter 'discovered' the lyrics to Jeremy when she was about 10 (she had been 'singing' the song for ages before!). She had seen the video way before but never really understood what the song was about - she just loved it. But after understanding what the song was all about, it blew her mind (as much as a 10yr old mind can be!).
So yes, it is overexposed because of the video (seeing PJ hardly have any videos) and it being on MTV and such, but it is still a beautiful and powerful song and we should love it as such!!!!

Jeremy is probably my least favourite of the "popular" pj songs i.e alive daughter, betterman etc.

but lately my love for it has come back, i think i just listened to it too much when i first got into pearl jam and then i always seemed to skip on the boots cause i'd heard it so many times before. now i love it again and i look forward to hearing it on the boot.

its the same with a lot of music i listen to, i'll listen to a song so much it will lose all meaning then later on i'll rediscover it and fall in love with it all over again.

i think most jeremy haters would be similar to me where they have just heard it so many times, and unlike alive and even flow there isn't much change in the versions of jeremy.
  • I think it is a great song, but it all comes down to personal opinion and everyone has different taste as to what makes a great song.

Ain't gonna be any middle anymore.

Coloris gustibusque non disputandum, you're right BJM

still, some have lost some of their meaning due to overexposure and 'anthemalisiation'. Although there is still the fact of what it means to you personally, regardless of the greater audience, and knowledge of how to interpret the lyrics.
I myself have found myself singing 'Alive' around the age of 7, this was ca. 1994.
You have to agree that this is the perfect example - definition even - of what is referred to as 'Mainstream' (even though I was a pretty cool kid with great musical taste :D)

  • I have a new appreciation for it after hearing it live in Albany

The crowd responded to this song like none other, i don't know why but the energy was amazing

I loved it before and love it even more now
Oh he fills it up with the love of a girl...

Come back didnt click for me untill november the 8th, not because of audience participation... Because of an emotional performance. It was made even better because of how pissed Eddie was getting because of a poor crowd, so he sung that little bit edgier and it sounded amazing.

with 7 years, hey man that's amazing. I was only able to appreciate Pearl Jam with 17 years. Before I was in a boarding school in Belgium and we were listening to hum, hum, sorry,... techno. Then I went to (pop) rock music ( oasis, blur,...) and finally I bought yield, great one :)
