I believe Ishmael by Daniel Quinn influenced DTE. I recommend.

About 20 years ago they all gave book ideas in a newsletter. Zinn, Quinn, and others were on it. They just released a reading list a few months ago too

100 times yes! Even if you don’t agree with everything he says, the perspective he lays out is fascinating.
  • I want to say I heard about The Three Body Problem from one of the bands lists.
looking to hear of the earth

What a great list!  Below are some additional books favored by the band.  There are bound to be some duplicates but here they are.

  • Checking over the list, I looked up Madman's Drum and discovered it is actually a wordless novel, which sounds fascinating.  I am currently 2/3 of the way through Blood Meridian so I could probably use a break from words after I finish.
  • Yeah it sounds interesting for sure.
Meridian is an amazing book as well.
    Thanks for uploading that list!

  • Good thread!

I can't remember what interview I saw this in, but I definitely remember tracking the books down.  This was 1992 I want to say.  Someone asked Ed what he was reading and he replied:

The Monkey Wrench Gang - Edward Abbey
    Target Center - Jun 30, 1998
    Allstate Arena - Oct 09, 2000

    Fort William Garden - Sep 09, 2005

  • Reading Into Thin Air was the most terrified I ever felt reading a book. If you like this author read The Odyssey of Pat Tillman

Russell Banks was one of my favorite authors. After reading Affliction, Sweet Hereafter and Continental Drift, I was all in. Sweet Hereafter, in particular, reminded me of the melancholic landscape of my childhood. His book of short stories, The Angel on the Roof, is one of my go-to collections. Rest easy and thank you for the beautiful, insightful distractions. #russellbanks

;) Blood Meridian 👍 a awesome “Western” with rather less story and talking people but often spectacular & picturesque scenery.
You’ll drift through an almost emty country under a wide sky with views on beautiful landscapes -  if you can imagine it. And be alarmed by any human being who appears there at the horizon far away.
