am i correct in this thought on the song?

Is he happy losing someone to someone else? Does this make him "smile"
"Three crocked hearts" seems to me that there is someone else..and HE lost them to the other person. And he misses them.

This prob. has been discussed before..but this is new to me. Happy new year!!

Last time this was discussed from memory, I think it was about another muso and the "three crooked hearts, swirls all around" is in reference to their doodling on a piece of paper. But don't ask me to remember who the muso is because I've got Joey Ramone stuck in my head and I think that's wrong and he is the subject of Come Back. Someone else will probably be able to tell you. :)

  • It means to you what you want. That is how I look at all music. Sometimes my meaning is very different from the intended meaning, oh well :)

What a song. Been listening to the version from Katowice, Poland (2000) for days.

    It is so great live!
Oh he fills it up with the love of a girl...

I know Jeff & Ed are credited for the song...but did Jeff wrote the lyrics?

No, Ed did...sort of. He actually took the lyrics from a letter given to him by Dennis Flemion of The Frogs.

    From the link Jeanie posted:
The lyrics were taken from a note that Dennis Flemion from The Frogs left for Ed. Ed talked about it before the band played the song at the 6/30/06 show in Milwaukee. This is from the Two Feet Thick concert summary -

Ed tells of the story of "Smile" and the local origins of its lyrics: "There's a band that hails from Milwaukee - they're an important band to myself other guys in this group, guys in Queens of the Stone Age, Kurt (Cobain), Nirvana - everybody was really touched and moved by this little band. They were called The Frogs. I've got all their records, all 692 I believe. And they opened for us years ago and one night, after we had finished our little tour, I opened my notebook and there was a little note from one of the Frogs and it was beautifully written and the band was playing a song in the room that day in practice and I just started singing the note. These words are written by Denis from the Frogs - he's here tonight. Denis, this is for you, this song's called 'Smile'". During the song, Ed sings "Denis, this is how I feel."
"If no one sees you, you're not here at all"
