Is this song about an std that a dude gave to his girl after he cheated on her?

Possibly. I'd definitely pull the adultery card for this song though.
Such a shame it's so good, but about something so awful :D

Oh please let it rain today. This city's so filthy. Like my mind in ways.
Oh it was the time. Like a clean new taste.
Smiling eyes before me and tears from my face.

Wash my love. Wash my love. Wash my love, yeah.

Sin for sale. Buying just a need. O who planted all the devils seeds?
And what's the truth? And the truth that lies at home.
It's on the inside and I can't get it off. Yeah.

Wash my love. Wash my love. Wash my love, yeah.

What's clean is pure. But hey, I'm white on the outside. Though I stray.
What she don't know today might kill us both tomorrow. Bring it back someway.
Bring it back, back, back... to the clean form. To the pure form.

Wash my love. Wash my love. Wash my love. Wash my love.
Wash my love. Wash my love. Wash my love. Yeah
Wash my ...wash my...wash my love....yeaaaaaaahhhhhhh

Yeah, I could see the STD reference. Wash the yesterday, and potential AIDS/STD away. Is this about Hugh Grant? It was first played in 1991. Ohmygawd! That is so lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng ago. Anyway, something along the lines of the Hugh Grant/prostitute story.

    These lines say it all.

I think the lyrics are saying that pure/clean love is what he wants back, but he lost it because he strayed (cheated).

And the reference to "Wash My Love" is just meaning that his love is dirty because he strayed and he wants to go back in time and undo what he has done so that his love is clean again.

    That's how I see it anyway ...
Why I think the STD reference is in there because of the "What she don't know today might kill us both tomorrow." If Person X in a relationship with Person Y strays via unprotected sex with Person AIDS, then Person X has unprotected sex with Person Y they may both end up as Person AIDS(x) Person AIDS (y).

    or x*y = xy, x*a = xa, xa*y=xya - I'm having too much fun with this :D

True, but that might also be a refernce to the cancer of deceit that will eat away at their relationship. She doesn't know it, but their relationship will never be the same because of what he's done. She means a lot to him so he needs to get things back to where they were, but knows he never will.

I think it's about someone who strays from their relationship...feels dirty about it, but also get's off on it

So, do you think if we ask really nicely in this thread maybe someone in the *know* would just happen to give us a little more insight into this song? I wouldn't know who to ask or how, but maybe an ****Official-What-Does-Wash-Mean*****thread?

hahahahahhahaha I just made myself laugh :D

  • Y'all put too much into this. Clearly it's about a guy washing and detailing his sportscar.

I always thought it was about passing on HIV by having unprotected sex outside of your relationship. BUt that' sjust my interpretation.

That, or impregnating the "other woman" is how I take it.

And that is why Pearl Jam lyrics are always good. A few interpretations and they all seem very reasonable. Great song by the way, one of my favs.

Actually, my interpretation is that it was an SUV.

Agreed, adultry seems more like the theme of the story. I see where the arugment for STD's is, but I dont like it is likely that they would write a song about them.
Oh he fills it up with the love of a girl...
