Does anyone else think that WISHLIST is a love song about living up to the expectations that you have of yourself with regard to your partner? Expectations that you know you can never live up to.

yes, I do. Or at least, something along those lines.

I don't necessarily think it's a totally sad song, about the disappointments of not being able to live up to expectations. I think of it more as a vow to continue to strive to live up to said expectations.

It's probably one of my favorite PJ songs. Definitely one of the most poetic.

I wish I came from a country, who took care of it's poor.
But in the meantime, thanks for the example,
In the meantime, thanks for giving us hope.

Its beautiful and wistful and creates such a romantic moment. The "verb to trust" line perfectly describes that feeling of being so in love that you wish you could maybe be something more than just a human being with human failings for the sake of the one you love.

I am in your camp SLH916!

Coupled with the love song aspect I feel it's about how one wants to be many things, the duality and paradox of such things. And maybe it is meant to show us that we really are all and all is one. : >

To me it's a blending of love song and examining the self to know and be oneself as an individual and in relationship.

It's a happy upbeat groove and feel ... I think it's eddie playing with all those dualities we feel and the hope to give unconditional love.

I wish I was a sailor with someone who waited for me.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.
I wish I was a messenger, and all the news was good.
I wish I was the full moon shining off a camaro's hood.

I wish I was an alien, at home behind the sun,
I wish I was the souvenir you kept your house key on.
I wish I was the pedal break that you depended on.
I wish I was the verb to trust, and never let you down.

I wish I was the radio song, the one that you turned up,
    I wish, I wish, I wish, I wish,
    I guess it never stops.

i guess the song is about yearning......but.......i've always looked at it as positive........wishes or dreaming can be positive thing.......and i love the studio version's ending as the volume lowers "i wish i was a radio song the one you couldn't turn up"........:)

I never thought of this before, but a mark of an artist is to put seemingly disparate entities together as if they always belonged. A human and a verb - it's so Neruda. His poetry was incredibly obvious in this type of writing. I'm finding that many poets have it, but his words were just so blatant. I never thought of it before with this song. Way to go!

I guess as poets/lyricists that's our job. To connect things that usually have no connection which in turn would add that much more to what is considered a comprehensive life.

Also, poems/photographs are memory holes. I posted about that on my blog http://bibliobella.blogspot.com. Very cool idea that is centuries old.

I've always felt like wishlist is a sad song. The whole song is about wishing you were someone or something else. I mean its like he wants to be something positive which conversely means he doesnt feel that he is. Even the end of the song, "I guess it never stops". I dunno...its a sad song but its awesome.
    ı think it's a sad song too.
sometimes it makes me even cry because it makes me remember the things we will never be able to have.

I've always interpreted the verb in that line to mean the actual word "wish". He uses it over and over in the song and each time is so eloquent. I think he was paying homage to the word "wish".

    Just my opinion.
