Are we really still using the term 'canceled' in a serious manner?
I don't know. is there a new, flashier term the kids are using now? permanent social hiatus, perhaps?
IDK, it felt like a silly contrived term 2 years ago, it feels even sillier now.

    Who's recently been 'canceled', anyone?

& who's been permanently 'canceled'? Mel Gibson still gets work... Louis CK was nominated for a grammy this year.
    seen Roseanne lately?

She's one... I guess Gina Carano too, but IIRC correctly they were unapologetic about saying some pretty racist / anti-Semitic shit, and now no one wants to hire them. (although I think Roseanne had a couple things on Fox earlier this year)

IDK... if I have that right, it doesn't sound like victimhood... just consequences to shitty behavior.

I wouldn't mind seeing both those terms- "woke" and "cancelled"- simply die and go away.  They have both been co-opted and re-co-opted and re-re-co-opted to the point of being meaningless.
And I'm not saying they should be banned or cancelled (lol), but at some point they become useless barbs rather than a reflection of studied and critical thinking.  "Politically Correct", for example, has pretty much died off because it has become cliched and useless.  All of these popular buzz words will have little or no meaning in the historical near future.

I'm also not saying a certain amount of colloquialism in language is a bad thing.  I can dig.  It's cool. Those are phrases that have stuck around and work well in certain circumstances.  But in general, I think it would be more useful to improving communication if being  articulate became more popular, attractive, and common.  Language is degrading to the point of becoming vague or even base.

people (my wife) always get confused when I say "I'm down". they're like "soooo...does that mean you're in, or..not?".

it's short for "down with that" folks, which means you like it/are interested! come on!

I don't think being cancelled makes it sound like they are victims. but either way, it's just semantics. society always comes up with flashy simple terms to call things. this isn't any different. and I don't think being "cancelled" is so absolute, where the requirement is being wiped from society; it just means people are facing consequences for their actions. there will always be SOMEONE in some dark corner (fox news) that takes them back.

I disagree, most of the ways I've seen it used has always carried a connotation of unfairness, which shouldn't come as a surprise... it was used predominantly in the right wing media ecosphere, which has mastered the victimhood routine.

You brought up Roseanne... does she deserve another tv show? If so, why?

Networks don't want to deal with her bullshit or have her attached to their brand which is their right. Isn't that the free market at work?

Nor do certain advertisers, all though I’m sure My Pillow, tactical this, that and the other thing and buy gold now would be happy to advertise with her show.

She's a comedian and makes fun of people.  Don Rickles would have been out of a job if he lived in todays world.

Yes she deserves another show.  She's funny and her shows were always groundbreaking.  They were woke before the term was a thing.

Rickles wasn't straight up racist though...Roseanne was tweeting some racist shit that got CBS to dump her.

She is an insane magat at this point.

Yeah, I don't know... I get your point, but OTOH, I don't give comedians a free pass just because they're comedians. I get that they've always pushed the envelope, but modern day standup seems weird to me, and doesn't feel all that smart. (at least what I've seen of it)

I watched Bill Burr's Red Rocks special, and maybe it's me, but it doesn't resonate with me anymore... he wasn't offensive, I like the guy, and I think he's a smart comedian, it just felt flat and weird.

Regarding Roseanne, if ABC or any other network wants nothing to do with her, that's their prerogative, no?
If there was a market or audience for her, her standup special from February would have got more traction IMO. That it didn't speaks volumes.

& the Jason Aldean thing is a perfect example.

He hasn't been canceled, he just played Mansfield the other night.
To me that whole thing just seemed like the media trying to create a story that wasn’t even there. I think it shows the failure of how journalism has responded to the existence of social media. Now many of them will just drag twitter etc. to find a story they can inflate. The problem being that social media is rarely a reflection of real life and instead gives the impression that fringe is commonplace.

it's not up to me to say whether she deserves another tv show or not. I honestly don't care either way. If someone wants to be in the news, they'll hire her. I won't boycott it because of who she is. I just won't watch it because I don't find her particularly funny.

I'm not sure why you are even asking me about how the free market works. I never argued she should or shouldn't ever get another job.

I still watch Louis CK comedies. Why? Because I think he's funny.

Networks don't want to deal with her bullshit or have her attached to their brand which is their right. Isn't that the free market at work?
the first while that cancel culture became a thing, I only saw it in regular media (I don't pay attention to right wing media whatsoever). It wasn't until later that the right decided to make it another culture war. but that's just my experience.

it's not up to me to say whether she deserves another tv show or not.

Only because you brought her up. Re: Louis CK, no judgement here.
