Funny Anecdote about Spin the Black Circle

Today I was driving my mom to work and Spin the Black Circle was on. My mom has heard me listen to enough PJ throughout childhood to recognize the sound of Eddie's voice immediately and this is what she had to say after hearing the first verse...

"Your idol is a heroin addict???" Haha... i can see where she got the idea from, but i explained to her that the needle was a record player needle and it was getting "dropped down" onto the record, and "turn me up" was the volume, not a metaphor for getting high. She also tried to argue that the "Spin, spin" meant an experience from the heroin.

See this needle...a see my hand...
Drop, drop, dropping it down...oh, so gently...
Well here it comes...i touch the plane...
Turn me up...wont turn you away...

  • Brilliant. I love when my mam gets the wrong idea about Eddie, but in the opposite sense. She's a huge fan of Driftin, Hunger Strike and such, but everytime she hears Given to Fly, and she hears the 'Fuckers' line, she always jumps in her seat: 'Did Eddie Vedder just swear?'

She really doesn't get it. :)
Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.
  • hah I never thought about Spin the Black like that before. Probably cos there's a picture of a turntable in the booklet (and their love of vinyl). I guess its kind of like when you read a book, you get the image in your head and that's it.

  • Ever think that maybe Ed wrote it like that on purpose to compare music and vinyls to a heroin addiction? :D

He had to have known that it sounded like heroin use. Brilliant!

Hahahaha!!! I love moms! They can shock the shit of you sometimes. (Eventhough this isn't PJ related)... it made me think of my mom and I talking about a friend of mine getting busted for weed... and my mom (who is an older southern woman) doesn't freak out about it or condemn him... noooo... what does she say? "Oh, honey, I hope he didn't have too much on him! It's not the worst thing in the world though... your brother smokes it everyday!" I about fell on the floor! My mom "informed" me of my brother's use.... something the rest of us have been trying to keep a secret from her for YEARS! :D HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! I love my mom!
