Last Exit... hmmm....

Just from the lyrics, it would seem like this would be a grim song about death. But the music makes it seem like it's about letting go of the past and starting new. Kind of like Life Wasted. Hmmm..... thoughts? The "three/four days" motif is kind of confusing, also.

I think it's about letting go of a troublesome past. Like your "last exit" from your old life. Really, really a lot like Life Wasted.

Lives opened and trashed
Look, ma, watch me crash
No time to question
Why'd nothing last
Grasp and hold on
Hold tight and fast
Soon be over
And I will relent

Let the ocean swell, dissolve 'way my past
Three days, and maybe longer
Won't even know I've left

Under your tongue
I'm like a tab
I will give you what
You're not s'posed to have
Under my breath
I swear by sin
For better or for worse
A best we begin

Let the sun climb, oh, burn 'way my mask
Three days, and maybe longer
Shed my skin at last
Shed, shed

Let the sun shine, burn 'way my mask
Three days, and maybe longer
Won't ever find me here

Let the ocean dissolve 'way my past
Four days, and not much longer

Let my spirit pass
This is, this is
This is, this is
This is, this is
My
Last exit
It's a town full of losers and I'm pulling out of here to win

Actually I always took this song to be about suicide. The "3 days, maybe longer" part I always thought was how long it took to find the body. Shed my skin, let my spirit pass, this is my last exit. A few lines I relate to suicide. I could be wrong though.

This is also a very kick ass tune. Love the improv beginning. About the music being uplifting sort of, that's Vitalogy for ya, leading you into a false sense of security, like Better Man.

I've always been confused about this one. I've always just assumed it was about suicide, or at the very least death. I love in the live version when Eddie sings "three days and not a fuckin' second longer". It may change the meaning of the line, but it still sounds cool

I tend to think it's a song about someone contemplating suicide. the three days/four days thing ... the "maybe longer" and "not much longer" -- all of that is him going back and forth, "should I do it or not?"

    I don't know. that's what I get from it.
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do
  • I think that it's about having to choose either sucide or living and the last exit is saying goodbye to what is behind them wether it be where ever they're goign to go after death or leaving past memories to live.

It's really a song that's probally saying don't do sucide and leave that door tightly locked behind so that it's your last exit through it.

The three day thing is the this is going to be the hardest desision ever and it's goign to take 3 days maybe longer. planning what exctally you're goign to do to fight these sucidal feelings coming back to haunt you.

I just don't get the feeling this is a song about suicide....in fact no PJ song has ever given me the sense of giving up or quitting. RVM, Last Exit, and Life Wasted are very similar to me spiritually. Putting the past behind.

The three days four days reminds me of a nurse or doctor giving an estimate of how much time before death of a family member. A countdown to the spirit passing, shedding the skin, removing the mask.
