Why the blue cover with the avocado…

This is one more interpretation…I apologize if I am repeating anything, or everything…

For me Pearl Jam has been a journey of sorts…Pearl Jam saw an angry and perhaps confused youth seeing life and beginning to take in all the darkness with Ten, continuing on to a more aggressive attack with VS, continuing to eat, and create more blackness. And then Vitalogy, Complete Black surrounds our protagonist. An unleashing of emotion, with songs like last exit and whipping, and trips through the other side with Tremor Christ and Immortality, Only to have a complete suicide in No Code. They said “not for you” in Vitalogy and proved it in No Code. Dropped any excess skin. In Yield they find themselves rising up in a time of rebirth and recreating, Yielding back into this world. Only to over shoot and leave earth’s atmosphere in Binaural and tell life through heighten eyes…

Riot act saw a returning to this earth by our former Kings, settling back down. Looking around, and seeing where things are before they begin. Re adjusting their bearings

And then now they have polished themselves off, and reenter the world as PEARL JAM. A pretty outside; one of many layers. And that’s what Pearl Jam is. A catchy single, WWS, but a lot of depth, and a lot of layers. A lot of pieces sewn together. i.e. The outside of the book jacket. And the inside is dark. The inside pictures as well as the songs, severed hand, comatose, And each song, is the same. A catchy name(for one reason or another), with a lot of layers (both muscially, and lyrically).

It gets crazy the more you dissect band, the album, the words, the song arrangement, actual CD…Its all about many layers creating one whole…Pearl Jam !!

I also think it’s a philosophical statement by them…

The Avocado Declaration was initiated in January 2004 by Californian politician Peter Camejo (b. 1939) as part of the Avocado Education Project to explain how the Green Party of the United States needed to adopt a firm and uncompromising identity if it was to promote its values and combat the opposition of the more powerful Democratic and Republican Parties in the United States.

It was called the "Avocado Declaration" to emphasize the ideal of Party Members being like the avocado: "Green on the inside; green on the outside."

A good friend of mine who I respect for his amazing sense of design said to me that the blue cover with the avocado is the weakest design of all their albums and I agree. But the music is exploding and that's what is most important to me.
Why do I keep fuckin' up?

  • Well, they are surfers and songs like big wave and marker in the sand clearly refer to their love of the ocean so why not the cover? Just a guess of course. I also have my BA in Fine Arts so in my education, blue and green are analogous colors that look great together. The combination of closely related colors coupled with the smooth clean lines and organic shapes I think says "hey the inside rocks so hard that we don't need to dress it up"! Also, just a guess.

Speaking of the blue avocado cover. . . I was walking to the store yesterday, and I looked at the sky, and I thought, "It's a Pearl Jam blue." I kid you not that beautiful blue is now referred to as Pearl Jam blue in my consciousness :)

well no one is forcing the sweet little birdies to eat avocados are they? :o so reason to dislike it then. hell, poinsettas and chocolate are poisonous to doggies...and yet i still manage to love em all, seperately of course. :)

i like the cover. i enjoy it's simplicity and colors/shapes. and sure, i have my BFA, MA all in art...for whatever it's worth, which really...not much...b/c personal taste is just that. one can discuss the 'art' of it all they like, but for the general public it simply comes down to, you like what you like.

  • Mike said in an interview that Ed was getting pissed off about the artwork...arguing, and yelled, "I don't care if you put a fucking avacado on it!" someone kind of made a cover up as a joke, but it stuck.

    that's the story I heard

  • i posted the avocado delcaration thing here and on other posts regarding the meaning of the avocado...an no one seems to bite. this is OBVIOUSLY the reason for the avocado. i don't even know if it's worth discussing after hearing that.

also - AngelofIndifference - marker in the sand has nothing to do w/the beach

Well if Eddie didn't care about the coverart, then it might not have anything to do with the Avocado Declaration...however, the other band members may be trying to make that statement in the process as well...

i dont have the album in front of me, as I gave it to my brother, a loose PJ fan who wouldnt buy it for himself, but will listen to it since I gave it to him, but in the book jacket, as with all of the albums, there is always a credit line for "concept"...and someone's name; not a band member. And I dont know who if is for Pearl Jam, but it makes me wonder how much the members put into the actual design. I am sure they have to approve it, but to give credit for the "concept" always came to me as for the album art, and name...Maybe I am wrong about this...

But I think one great thing about PJ, is that they often times leave things abstract, and for that reason, they are very open to interpretation, and that is part of the depth that they posses, and the reason why we can go on and on debating interpretation. But similar to "you like what you like" - decides2dream , each song, and picture, and video, and album art, means what it means to you, and take what you can from it...

Its funny, I am always so confident in my interpreations, but I hear others, and they are valid too, and in a year or two my then current life situation will let me interpret everything differantly...And I will be so confident in my interpretation then as well...

we are so confident in our speach when we say what we say.."
