listening to my ipod today and rival came on, aint heard the song in a long time, lets here some love for rival
all my rivals will see what i have in store, my gun...
i've been harboring fleets in this reservoir, red sun...
and this nation's about to explode
your disciples are riddled with metaphors, well hung...
better pony up and bring both your barrels full, not one...
as we release this unspeakable toll...
(every grain of sand equals)
(all the stars and everyone)
how's our mother to damn these contributors...with mud?
how will the man who made chemicals difficult...shed blood?
how's our father supposed to be told?

I thought it was about Columbine.
I was fortunate to hear this song live once, but the lack of the occasional piano key took something away. Which is unfortunate because it was good otherwise
we sit around and wonder exactly why our marriage should feel threatened by gay marriage
I can never get myself to listen to it. I don't know what it is.
opened up my itunes 2 secs ago and clicked on rival from philly 00
Yes, it is. This is what Stone had to say about it in a May 2000 interview from MTV.com:
"During a recent sit-down with MTV News, guitarist Stone Gossard described how one of the songs he wrote for the album, "Rival," draws upon his reflections on last year's massacre at Columbine High School "[It's] kind of almost a cartoony look at male ego and sort of anger, violence," Gossard said, "what makes people kind of snap and how people are unpredictable. "[There was] just kind of a melody that went through my head and right after Columbine happened. It kind of maybe took on a little of that, where I put myself in the mindset or tried to think about what those guys may have been thinking the night before."
If you hate something, don't you do it too
And that failure's no success at all."
"Don't ya think its sometimes wise not to grow up."
"Cause life ain't nothing but a good groove
A good mixed tape to put you in the right mood."

Tough drums, tough riff.
you can just imagine someone lacing up the army boots, strapping on a couple of AK47s and going on a 1 man rampage to this tune, cartoon style.
