one of the most underrated PJ songs in my opinion. yes, the name is horrible but the song is so much better than a lot of people here seem to give it credit for."I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"0

There are many mixed emotions out there about this album, but it has grown on me and I really enjoy listening to it.
You Are was one that I especially love on this album. It took me a while to see the beauty in this one, but when I did, I couldn't stop listening to it.Oh he fills it up with the love of a girl...0 -

Same thing here. I have 6 pj records in my CD changer, and to be honest the just file through one after the other fairly inconsequentially. Before I knew it I found myself repeating this CD over and over again.
There are some real gems on that record. Perhaps its not for the Pearl Jam faint of heart, but frankly I don't get all of the negativity towards that album0 -

RA is a damn fine record, and I won't hear a word said otherwise.
Can't Keep - Excellent opener. The music has an eastern tinge, and the lyrics are second to none: "I won't live forever, you can't keep me here..."
Save You - Is there anything more fun than spitting out the obscenities in this song? The Brain of J/Hail Hail of Riot Act.
LBC - One of the best openers for a concert in the PJ catalogue. So much right with this song.
Cropduster - This has become one of my favourites off the record, and I can't even explain why. The music has a strange "rolling" sound to it - the entire song, both music and lyrics, conjure up images of circles for me. Underrated in the extreme.
Ghost - A weaker rocker than Save You, but probably one of two "filler" songs on the album. Still some lyrical gems though: "I've seen it all before... Bring it on cos I'm no victim..."
I Am Mine - A PJ classic. When a band can age this gracefully, you wonder why bands like Nickelback et al even bother. The outro solo is one of my favourite passages of music ever.
Thumbing My Way - Just beautiful. "Haunting" is an overused term in music criticism, but it's so apt for this song. The story in the song is so sad, yet tinged with that perfect bit of hope that we all find in PJ's music. "No matter how cold the winter, there's a springtime ahead..."
You Are - I didn't really appreciate this till I saw it on LATG. It really comes to life in concert. Lyrics are fairly generic, but the music more than makes for it with pure groove.
Get Right - The second of the "filler" tracks I metioned earlier. Someone once said it would make a perfect Wellwater Conspiracy song, and I would agree.
Green Disease - Impossibly good. The lyrics are incredible, Eddie's message is really focused. To tie that up in a bouncy punk rocker as catchy as this... Well, that's genius, guy.
Help, Help - Probably the "underdog" of the PJ catalogue (you could say the same about Riot Act in general, I guess). The first half of the song is like one of the experiments off Vitalogy - which is good - but the second half is incredible. The intensity kicks up a notch, the lyrics are brilliant (The man they call my enemy, I've seen his face, he looks just like me... a mirrror), and "Creadles" is wailing away underneath.
Bu$hleaguer - Well, we've all got our opinions on this one, don't we? It's blunt, for definite. Musically, it's one of my favourites, and the chorus is just plain imposing.
1/2 Full - It's like Red Mosquito meets Rival. One of Mike's best "display" songs, I feel. Lyrically, it's short and sweet - "Don't see some men as half empty..."
All or None - One of the great album-closing songs. I don't like it as much as some people seem to on these boards, but the last verse is so great (To myself I surrender, to the one I'll never please).
So, with that long-winded reply out of the way.... Yeah, I like Riot Act.Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.0 -

Good post.
Only thing I disagree with is I love Ghost, I think its awesome. I also love the "trilogy" of Cropduster, Ghost, I Am Mine. To me it sounds like you're out to sea, things start to get rocky towards the end of Cropduster. Ghost, its like a huge storm out at to sea and the end of the song is like the crescendo of the storm things are really crazy. And I Am Mine, is the calming after the storm, the steady classic rocker that just pulls you right back in and levels you out.
Also, I love All or None. But its all good.you couldn't swing if you were hangin' from a palm tree in a hurricane.0 -

TMW has become one of my favorite PJ songs lyrically, its flawless.
Ghost is a great song, nothing filler about it.0 -
Amazing album. My 2nd fave behind No Code.
Love the track breakdown, BTW.

Love Riot Act. My favorite song on it is I Am Mine.En mi vida,
el oscuro me mantiene
cuando yo te vi
en la lluvia me prometiste tu sangre
Estrella de la mañana
Samael te persigo a ti
y si me quedo sin alas
ademas me muero por ti0 -
One thing I just noticed is how "Can't Keep" has only been played (full band) twice since the end of the 2003 tour...weird. The only love it got in 06 was in Hawaii and that was just Ed.0

IS there negativity towards this album? I guess so since a lot of you are referring to it. I just got off my lazy keester and joined the Ten Club / message pit after the last album (Pearl Jam) even though I've been listenning for years.
I always thought Riot Act was amazing. I will say that I think this is an album that makes even more sense live, and that I was able to get into it more after seeing some of the songs performed in concert ... but then that's true for all their albums / songs.
'Cropduster' is on the short list for best lyrics in a PJ song in my opinion. This is you know, another "I think this one is their best... or... maybe this one... or..." Pearl Jam album as far as I'm concerned. It's just as strong as every other.
I can't even imagine why anyone would be down on this album if they are into the others.0 -
Climbing on a mountain
Floating out on the sea
Far from lights of a city
The elements they speak to me...
Whispering that life
Existed long before greed...
Balancing the world
On its knee...
Don't see some men as half empty
See them half full of shit
Thinking that we're all but slaves
There's ain't gonna be
No middle anymore
It's been said before
The haves be having more
Yet still bored
Won't someone save?
Won't someone save
The world?
^these are some damn good lyrics, and the guitar sounds like something you would here at a biker stop somewhere on the way to South Dakota. This album is filled with good lyrics, top to bottom."Don't let the darkness eat you up..."
