Black

Hi everyone....I'm new to the forums, although I've always listened to Pearl Jam, they weren't one of my favorites. I've always loved Black, and it was until recently, thanks to a very good friend of mine, corduroy10, that I've been listening more and more to them. I'll admit that I don't have all their releases, but I don't think that is a crime..is it? LOL
I've been reading up on a lot of the posts here and I'm finding out that a lot of people are really touched and moved by their music. I've been personally touched by "Black", it reflected a time in my life where I felt the lyrics were sepcifically written for me during that time.
Without going into specifics, I was with somebody I should not have been with, she was married, but circumstances got us together. I had to let her go, I knew it was the right thing to do.
Anyone else would like to share a little tidbit about themselves and how the song relates to them?

P.S.....hope to see you in upcoming shows....who's going to Albany and Hartford?

  • Black has a very special place in my heart, also.

The line that gets me the most, as I'm sure it does for many others, is "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star, in somebody elses sky, but why can't it be mine?"
  • Different songs have meant alot to me at different times...Yes Black was one of them I acaully copied some lyrics on the shoebox that I put all my momentos from my High School Girlfriend when we broke up. Rearviewmior was a great help to me at a time when I was trying to get over my childhood and Immortality was there for the times when I was so sad about Cobain...

I am sure there are a number of others but those are the big ones...

    See you Albany May 12

I originally bought Ten for Alive and Evenflow, but the first track that I noticed and thought "that's amazing" was Black. Hauntingly beautiful.

Daughter helps me to feel strong and angry instead of sad when I think about the worthless fuck I have for a father.

Good music just isn't enough for me, the lyrics have to mean something as well. I need to hear a story being told, that's why I love PJ so much.

  • Although the whole Ten Album got me hooked, Black has always been my favorite and had a special place in my heart. It came out during my first serious relationship....and when it all fell apart, I felt Ed was talking to me. He was the only one that could relate.

I'm going to get a tattoo, actually, of a "papyrus" looking scroll that has "Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be."

    That sounds awesome.
I know what you mean about having a relationship break down, and hearing Black made me feel he wrote that song for me. It's always a good thing to know that there are others who feel the same way, that it's not just you who went through that.

no mean to be hyperbolic...., but Black is just excessively superb.

"I know you'll be a sun in somebody else's sky.... but why it can't be mine?"

the sadness also can be beautiful.

Black is the song that pulled me in. A local station was playing a concert of them and there I was in a soft lit room, crying at the end of the song. Just before it ended i open my eyes kind of knowing why the tears were there. And Ed said. They don't understand they don't understand. And deep in my heart I felt that pain of not being understood and seeing how selfish we as people can be to one another. Which allowed me to see myself not only as a victom but as an abuser. And from that PJ has become my mirror. See you in Hartford and Paris

    Love you all

Mike is the person who truly pulled me into the band. No matter how bad my day is, once I pop in a live bootleg and listen to some amazing guitar solo, everything feels better.

When it comes to lyrics...yeah, Black is special to me but I think everyone kinda goes thru the same thing with a girl at one time or another. But now, the lyrics from WWS and Severed Hand are the ones that are really touching me.

The whole ten album pulled me in. Brilliant. A funny thing that happened at that stage in my life was: I wrote down the words from Alive on a piece of paper (before we had internet and a computer*) and a friend of mine saw the lyrics and thought i'm going to commit suicide. LOL. I am far from that.
