Matt Bayles & Binaural

Pearl Jam’s Binaural was made with Tchad Blake, the first new producer for them since Brendan. I was the engineer on the gig, but anyone who knows Tchad knows his sonic template is uniquely his. Watching his process broadened my view of sounds/tone immensely.

After wrapping up in Seattle we went down to the Sound Factory in LA for some percussion overdubs with some of Tchad’s go to people. Two of those people were Pete Thomas and Wendy Melvoin. Pete you would know from playing with Elvis Costello and Wendy from a little project called Prince and the Revolution. Mitchell Froom also came in to do a bit of keyboards. It was great getting the chance to work with all of them.

At a certain point the band wanted Brendan O’Brien to mix a few songs. I was tasked with going to LA, transferring the record to 48 track digital and then went to Atlanta to be available if any engineering needs came up. This was my first time getting to be around Brendan as he mixed and needless to say I silently absorbed as much as I could. Southern Tracks was an iconic studio and it was my first time visiting it. Great people and an immense collection of studio toys.

It has come and gone much the way No Code and Yield anniverssaries did, but I would love to one day hear both the record that Blake originally recorded before BoB touched it, including the track sequencing.
His eminence has yet to show.

I might have a bunch of those tracks in my library. I’ll PM you if I can find them.

Hold on, Did BoB produce parts of the original Binaural or is this when they remixed it? I thought it was pure Blake....and love it
