Anyone else have an unexplainably great love for this one?

Maybe it's Ed's voice... maybe it's the complicated simpleness, maybe even just the harmonica...
I just can't say why I love it as much as I do.

Maybe you guys know :p

I always sing that part, with the 'one for each day, since i fell apart'.

I know the song is about an execution, but it makes me smile, lol.

When Ed belts "Footsteps" I can't help but sing along. I bought several bootlegs just to hear the concert version. Combine Hard to Imagine with Footsteps back to back (heard on Lost Dogs) and I am in my place. This song was an incredible interpretation of a Temple of the Dog song.

I don't have the melody on the top of my head, unfortunately. I recognize that in order to understand many Pearl Jam songs I can't separate the lyrics from the melody. However, at least I was able to find the lyrics:

Don't even think about reaching me. I won't be home.
Don't even think about stopping by. Don't think of me at all.

I did what I had to do. If there was a reason, it was you.

Aaah, don't even think about getting inside. Voices in my head. Ooh, voices.
I got scratches all over my arms. One for each day since I fell apart.

Ooh, I did, oh, what I had to do. If there was a reason it was you.

Footsteps in the hall... It was you, you.
Ooh, pictures on my chest... It was you. It was you...

Ooh, I did a what I had to do. Oh, and if there was a reason... Oh, there wasn't no reason. no.
And if there's something you'd like to do. Oh, just let me continue to blame you.

Footsteps in the hall... It was you, you.
Ooh, pictures on my chest... It was you, you. Oh

I could see how this protagonist turned into the Even Flow protagonist. Then it's on to Once, isn't it?

  • I really do have have cscratches.. one for each day.. the weird part is.. they occured many years after the release of the song.. oh well that part of the song and the part in Ghost where he sings.. "It doesn't hurt when I bleed... "wow I only wish and pray that I am the only one who goes through that shit.. cause I wouldn't wish these pains on anyone.. but thanks to the band for the words that have made my days worth waking up to.. scratches blood and all.. I don't think I'll ever not love this band, they will retire before I ever quit loving them.. and even after their retirement I'll love them..anyhow Footsteps is sucha hauntingly beautiful.. song always have loved it.. I always will ( that sounded a bit like the old 7-up commercials huh? 7-Up; "Caffine.. never had it never will!!"

It's the power in Ed's voice, the lyrics, the guitar (more than the harmonica, I think, but still, the harmonica is great!)...

me to that is a great bootleg
  • That song made me completely break down and cry the first time I heard it.

I read somewhere that it's about a man sitting in a prison cell, and while awaiting his execution, he reflects on the crime he committed.
    Honestly, it's up to interpretation.
To me, it's about trying to comprehend the death of a friend.
    I'll cut you in.
