A Porch Discussion Worthy of a College Course

What if Porch wasn't a break-up song at all? Or what if it was a break-up song, but that was only the sub-theme? The second verse is the key to this song, and the second verse has nothing to do with breaking up.

Deep thoughts?

What the fuck is this world
Running to? You didn't
Leave a message
At least I could have
Learned your voice one last time.
Daily minefield
This could be my time
How 'bout you?
Would you hit me?
Would you hit me?

All the bills go by
And initiatives are taken up
By the middle
There ain't gonna be any middle any more
And the cross I'm bearing home
Ain't indicative of my place
Left the porch
Left the porch

Hear my name
Take a good look
This could be the day
Hold my hand
Walk beside me
I just need to say...

Hear my name
Take a good look
This could be the day
Hold my hand
Lie beside me
I just need to say
What can I take?
I just want to be
I know that i would not ever touch you
Hold you
Feel you
Ever hold
Never again

I never really looked at the lyrics that long because it's just such a great song to listen to. Interesting. Are you sure it's not a break up song? It's definitely a song with a "me" and a "you."

I always thought it was about abortion...I guess b/c of the unplugged gig. Not sure though...I never really thought about it.

Didn't he add some lyrics in the unplugged version to be supportive of pro-choice? I believe it was originally written as a break-up song, and later became a lot of things.
