Perhaps I've been enlightened. Anyone else?

I agree with Chris :) EDIT: and Deni :)

    1,2,3,4, 5 against 1, 5, 5, 5 against 1 i said 1,2,3,4, 5 against 1

    something like that :-)

five against one is the 'other' name for the album isn't it. wasn't it on the inside of the cd case? (that's what having an ipod does to you, you forget what your albums look like, d'oh!)

I bought the tape the day it came out back in '93 and it had "Five Against One" on it. After I wore it out and had to go get a new one (before I decided to actually get a CD player), it just said "Vs." Shoulda maybe hung onto that original one though.. Who knew E-bay would take over the world?

Although there's been a lot of interpretation on the meaning behind "five against one" (with the one that I've heard the most being the band vs. the world, this would also go along with the album title "vs"), my own interpretation of it is more common sense than analytical. "Five against one" is another way of saying "masturbation". He talks about being hurt and how he'd rather be with an animal (once again, this analogy is assuming he's talking about a woman he had a relationship with) than someone like that. You see where the five against one part is coming in now?

Just giving you guys something else to think about! I'm sure it's not a correct interpretation by any means, but it's always made sense to me!

how does one commit to posting on a pearl jam message board so much, call themselves fans, and not know the lyrics to animal???? This is weird...You mean to tell me you've never looked up lyrics before??? I hope Im not sounding like an ass, but come on...animal is a great song and if you have ever seen a concert, or own a dvd, you know the crowd interaction spells the words out for you...come on people

the song is obviously from the point of someone being raped by five people.

I read a fan view on an extinct PJ site who stated they thought the song was about wanting to get rid of Dave A. as the drummer already. It was 5 (Eddie, Stone, Mike, Jeff, and Kelly, the band manager) against 1 (Dave A.). I don't really buy that, but thought it was interesting and thought I would share. Personally, I think it's about PJ vs. the world.

Good Lord! YOU'VE NEVER SEEN PEARL JAM LIVE?! What are you waiting for?! The only way to get the true Pearl Jam Experience is through the live show.

And to the more seasoned fans: let's not be snarky with those who don't know every single lyric the band has ever written. I own every studio CD, at least 30 bootlegs, been to 7-soon-to-be-8 shows, and I still don't know half of what the f**k Ed is singing during "Yellow Ledbetter". Lighten up; we all live and learn.

I know what you mean about YL, funny thing is, it's a lot easier to understand him in the live versions than the studio one!

So true about YL... I can "sing" along to it and sound almost perfect because I know what sounds should come out of my mouth. Just not sure what words they correspond to in Ed's mind lol

Funny thing about that....Ed doesn't know what the f**k Ed is singing during Yellow Ledbetter half of the time. Don't feel bad.

i got a PM from someone who said his brother was friends with ed's brother and he got ahold of the lyrics to the song.

i enver ehard the wanking theory. but from what i remember picking up in interviews, it's about rape. 5 guys abducting a girl and raping her. thus "id rather be with an animal"... rapists are lower than animals.

as to yellow ledbetter... you cant know the lyrics cos there really arent any. thus why it's not on pearljam.com. thus why they're totally different every time you hear it live. etc etc. he just kinda wings it. even in the studio he kinda just improv'd them.
