it can be both...in the lyrics in the actual CD, it was violins(ence)...personally, i prefer violence just cause it goes with the song better

that is what i think is most meant by it, but it does state, directly from the album VS lyric page, "violins(ence)"...

Violins and Violence are (almost) homophones. My guess is Ed just wrote it out both ways as kind of amusement, 'cause it sounds like it could be 'violins'.

Yeah, but in ABC's "When Smokey Sings" they clearly say

    "When Smokey Sings
    I hear violence..."

That always made me laugh...and here we are 15 - 20 years after ABC's hit and people are still debating the violence/violins thing. Pretty cool!! Maybe those words just shouldn't be used in songs anymore...

I think that the lyrics is always subjective..... take what you want from it and make it mean something to you... In Daughter does he sing "she dreams in color, she dreams of red" OR "she dreams in color, she dreams of Ed"??? It can be debated also in Betterman... "Can't find the Betterman" or "Can't find the Vedderman?" I speak some Italian and your V's are pronounced like B's....think about it...................

    sometimes the words are both

if they sound the same, it's an opportunity to be fuzzy. :)
