  • The rich who control everything. We're yelling at them there.
All that's sacred, comes from youth....dedications, naive and true.
  • yeah a grievance to the system that stifles any progress the little people try and scratch out for themselves.

its great on the garden DVD when that flag is held up at the right moment!

Not sure I understand that, you mean all flags (nationalism is bad) kind of thinking??? If so I don't think I agree.

This is a great song and was so lost on Binaural. Should have been track 1. I love it, especially when Ed salutes the crowd.

To me, it is just stating that even our great country that has done many good things historically for ourselves and others, we still fall way short of perfection and many people suffer for those failures.

We may be able to grow all the food we need but we can't feed our own hungry, or we may be able to develop lots of technology but our society is sick with selfishness and greed. Stuff like that, ya know?

i like what your saying about feeding our own hungary....i think poverty should be erased from our society too, i mean we are the richest country in the world...why should there be any starving?

    Have a drink they're buying
    Bottom of, bottle of denial
Big guy,... big eye,... watching me...
Have to wonder what it sees...
    (Sin...)
    Progress... laced with... ramifications...
    Freedom's big plunge

Pull the innocent from a crowd
Raise the sticks then bring em down
If they fail to obey... oh if they fail to obey,

For every tool they lend us... a loss of independence

I pledge my grievance to the flag
Cause you don't give blood... to take it back again
Oh we're all deserving something more
    Progress,... taste it,... invest-it-all
    Champagne breakfast for everyone

Break the innocent when they're proud...
Raise the stakes,... then bring em down...
If they fail to obey... oh if they fail to obey

Pledge your grievance to the flag
Cause you don't give blood... then take it back again
Oh we're all deserving something more.

    I want to breathe
    Follow the scene
    I want to taste
    Everyone I see
I want to run when I'm up high
I want to run into the sea
I only want life.... to be...
    I just want to be...
I will feel alive... as long as I am free...

I like the "cause you don't give blood . . . then take it back again" line. The way the words are presented visually adds a chaos to the song. I think there's a layer that is beyond the nationalism. Is the individual resigning control? Yet, how does the last section fit in with the rest of the song?

  • Has anyone here ever read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley? GREAT BOOK!! Anyways, whenever I hear "Grievance," I think of Bernard Marx, and his disagreement with the government and people being deprived of emotion and reasoning. Great book, I recommend anyong to check it out, and this song really reminds me of him.
