This is a tough song to interpret. We've had discussion on here many times about it. I personally think it is about someone dealing with an addiction.....alcohol, drugs.......it's all in the way you look at it.

i've heard the down syndrome one before - thought it sounds accurate. heard another that it is jeffs thoughts on eddie
  • I've heard somewhere that the song is about Jeff's childhood! His old neighbourhood etc!
    If I would, would you?
  • Hi. I share all your feelings, not quite sure.

I can say that he introduced the song in Vegas one time and made comments to the effect of :
"For all the fake palm trees, fake pyramids, and fake fakes.......this song is called Nothing As it Seems" or something like that.

thats def not word for word, but something to that effect. Pretty sure Vegas.
So I got that goin for me now....which is nice!

this song has been very much on my mind recently, of various reasons, and
......omg, the TB2000 dvd version, just blows me away.

one though that I can´t seem to rid myself of (and I´m kinda hoping you´ll find it utterly ridicolous, and throw in some good reasons why, while you´re at it) is that it´s self-based.

    uninvited cromosome...MS
    a chip off the cornerstone.....dad
occupations overthrown, a whisper through a megaphone....eventually loss of voice
a one way ticket headstone....... :(

I don't think it's a ridiculous idea. In fact, I think that is exactly what the song is about. It's a beautiful song, one of my favorites, very enlightening and very sobering.

well, if so should be the case, I´d like to beleive it´s just based on the fear of it......

the reference to methadone gave me the idea it was about heroin or other substance addictions. looking over the lyrics on the whole it could be about that. "nothing as it seems" sums up a lot of how life is to somebody messed up on drugs right there in the title
if you love somebody, set them free. if somebody loves you, don't fuck up
  • I could go on to say it was written for my ex but I am sure that is not so. This is a beautiful song and is quite plain in it's delivery. I believe the uninvited chromosome is in fact a child itself. ???? A man searching for Home.
K-The lost will do their best to get home, if they are loved. To our soldiers who have given what they had.
  • I remember the time when I'd really gotten into the song was when I'd started playing "Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" and I always used to think of the character Link for some reason. The reason I think I think this is because Link is someone who was always summoned to go on a quest as a young boy and he'd have to train and battle for years in all of the games, and when you look at what happens to him as a whole, you have to wonder what it would be like to live in a fantasy world and go through all of that...

But the down syndrome interpretaion is pretty logical and I could see that as well.

hey guys, i'm belgian so my english isn't that good

could anybody explain to me what these mean:

    -a chip off the cornerstone
    -one way ticket headstone
    -occupations overthrown
-Saving up a sunny day. Something maybe two tone

i don't even know what they mean litterally

  • hey guys, i believe its about the human condition. life, as some of you have already said, nothing being what it seems, regardless of drugs or addiction, or losing a job, or trying to be like your parents. the important thing is that you live your life and realize youre home. who knows. just one interpretation.
