Satans Bed

I downloaded this the other day, and was wondering how people interperet it.
i think he's obviously against the whole mentality surrounding models i.e how theyre meant to be perfect...a little bit hypocritical lol. its a good song.

it's not all been said...been said and done...
i've never slept in satan's bed
although i must admit...still visits my place
uninvited, as you know, he don't wait
funny how he always seems to fit in
funny how i always want to give in
sundays, fridays, tuesdays, thursday, the same
sometimes the special guest, he don't like to leave
already...in love...
already...in love...
already...in love...
already...
who made, who made up, made up the myth
that we were born to be covered in bliss?
who set the standard, born to be rich?
such fine examples, skinny little bitch
model, role model, roll some models in blood
get some flesh to stick, so they look like us
i shit and i stink, i'm real, join the club
i'd stop and talk, but i'm already in love
already...in love...
already...in love...
already...in love...
already...
in love...ah ha ha ha...
ah torture...follows reward...
follows torture...follows reward...
oh, oh my butt...
never shook satan's hand, look see for yourself
you'd know it if i had, that shit don't come off
i'll rise and fall, let me take credit for both
jump off a cliff, don't need your help so back off
i'll never suck satan's dick...
again, you'd see it, you know, right round the lips
i'll wait for an angel, but i won't hold my breath
'magine they're busy, think i'm doing okay...
already...in love...
already...in love...
already...in love...
I see the birds in the rain...

i know and i would not ever touch you, hold you, feel you ever... oh, never again

Someone had questions about this song, also in the Porch. The line:

    oh, oh my butt

brought up questions. I tried to answer them using an S&M theory and the devil, but I don't know if it washed with the poster.

Ok, so when you wrote that the song could be a dodgy song, you meant it could be a sex song? I probably live in a different country from you - are you in the US. I truly don't know what dodgy means, and I've read it twice today. :D Thanks for the clarification!

Has anybody else noticed that there's written "Santas dick" in the Lyrics in the Vitalogy CD?
-Thinking if he can't sleep how will he ever dream?-

That's just wrong! What was Eddie thinking, poor Santa. If Santa's wife, Jessica, saw that she'd give Eddie a stern talking to!

I haven't thought too much about this song, but maybe he was referring to his relationship with Beth when he sings "I'd stop and talk but I'm already in love." Or maybe not. It might not mean love in that sense. The song anyway seems to be about vices and giving in to them but never fully. Er, maybe.

I guess to put some contemporary relevance to it, we could look at the lyrics as not necessarily about anyone we know/know about, and basically make it irrelevant . . . ok, I just made myself laugh :D relevance/irrelevance, ironic, yes? :)

Anyhoo, yes, I think for any protagonist/person in similar situations, this song is about vices, and not giving in. The real question is . . . is it human nature to always be tempted elsewhere? I don't think it is, and I'm not sure if this song really addresses that. I'm part of a monogamy discussion in AET so I'm thinking along those lines.

  • Bump for this one year old thread.

I kinda got the sense that each verse was about something different. Like the first can be about being accused of cheating on someone but them denying although they are tempted.

Fuck the lyrics, I love this song. It rocks and that's all I care about. :)
"I'd rather be with an animal." "Those that can be trusted can change their mind." "The in between is mine." "If I don't lose control, explore and not explode, a preternatural other plane with the power to maintain." "Yeh this is living." "Life is what you make it."
  • I feel like it is about not giving into temptation, not selling out, and instead maintaining your personal identity . Eddies uses models for examples because they are all the same. If PJ had sold out this is what rthey would have become. By saying "I'm already in love" he is saying I am content where I am and I won't sell out (give in to the devil) and become like everyone else

  • looking at the lyrics again my opinion is further supported by the lyrics

"i'll rise and fall, let me take credit for both
jump off a cliff, don't need your help so back off"

PJ's talent is responsible for there own success, and they will also be responsible if they are no longer successful.

This is a bit of a stretch but jump off a cliff could be foreshadowing Pearl Jam's approach to No Code. They intentionally wrote less catchy songs and tried to decrease their fanbase with no code and maybe that was a reference of what was to come.

i like this explanation although i always gave "already in love" the connotation of turning down "love" from those who only offered it to him now because he was famous and he was in a long-term relationship that predated his fame

  • I would agree to that if you look at it in a more literal sense, and thats the brilliance of Eddies lyrics, the multiple meanings

    exactly my thoughts.

add: his reflecting on his feelings towards the pressure recieved from certain elements of society to be a role model.... I specifically remember Eds words on a live CD, maybe one of the Atlanta 94s I have....

"....Im a role model now so, tell everybody what to do and.....dont be wrong....."

He is happy and content(love)within himself as a person and relationship wise. The importance of fidelity and integrity is paramount. He will not be tempted by either the Satan of love/infidelity nor the Satan of corporate superstardom. He is basically a guy commited to his woman and his music and resents and refuses to give in or embrace the temptation to become Bono or indeed Tommy Lee or god forbid a combination of both!
Thats how I see it anyway.

    Choosing the shiny ones instead'

  • If I remember correctly... (I read this somewhere a long time ago)...at one point, Ed was approached/bothered by some supermodels and actresses. Brenda from Beverly Hills 90210 (dang, can't remember her name!) pestered him to be her date to an event. This was in the semi-early stages of PJ when the band was trying to come to terms with their success and all that was happening... Ed was with Beth at the time.

With that said, I think it's mostly about infidelity with a little "leave me the fuck alone" thrown in. :)
