I've read "the catcher in the rye" recently and after having read the book ,i noticed that whenever i hear "society" play somewhere i begin to recall holden.

"society, crazy and deep
i hope you're not lonely without me"

The topics of the "into the wild" and "the catcher in the rye" cannot be accepted to be similar ,though.but this song could also have been the st of catcher in the rye if it had been broadcast ever:)

That's a good point I think but the difference is that the guy in Into The Wild is included in his society and then feels the need to try something different,Holden on the other hand repeatedly tries to fit in with society and ends up being marginalised through the actions of uncaring others who leave him with little or no choice but to want to become a mute somewhere where he never has to talk to anyone(as he daydreams about at one point). I suppose Into The Wild is a more mature version of Holden.... Good observation on your part.

yeah, that's true.In both stories, the protogonist has a desire to escape;but the reason for Holden's nervous breakdown and need to get away is mainly his strong dependence to his childhood and his inability to perceive the adults' world whereas Christopher intends to change his life voluntarily.
