Earth Day 2020

News April 21 2020

Earth Day 2020 asks us to consider our impact on the climate and take actions to make a positive difference. It’s going to take all of us to lift this up, but together, we can save our planet. You can find ideas over at EarthDay2020 and check out some of the band’s partners’ work below.

Watch: Mike scored The Story of Plastic documentary to bring awareness to the impact of the mass production of single-use plastic. You can watch The Story of Plastic on Discover today at 2pmPT/ET or find more ways to watch.

Research: Indigenous people comprise less than 6% of the Earth’s population yet maintain 80% of the planet’s biodiversity. Nia Tero works alongside Indigenous communities around the world to protect vital ecosystems. Take a few minutes today to learn the Indigenous history of the land you are inhabiting and how to become an ally for Indigenous communities.

Follow: Every other breath we take comes from the sea – more than half our planet’s oxygen is produced by plankton, tiny organisms in the ocean that absorb carbon dioxide. We are honored to feature Paul Nicklen’s work on the cover of Gigaton. Check out and follow Sea Legacy to see more of Paul’s work and learn how to better protect our oceans.

Calculate: Did you know a gigaton is used to measure carbon emissions? One gigaton is 1 billion tons or roughly equal to 200 million elephants. We emit about 32.5 gigatons of carbon each year! Calculate your carbon footprint over at The Nature Conservancy and take actions to reduce it.

Engage: Every vote matters. Since 1970, The League of Conservation Voters has published the National Environmental Scorecard to provide objective information about the most important environmental legislation and the voting records of all members of Congress. Get to know your legislators’ positions and learn how to reach out to them to protect our planet.
