Tipping Grocery Workers

Maybe others are doing this already. Since the shit hit the fan , I feel for everyone on the front lines no matter what their job ( I still have to interact with the public very limited 2-3 people a day ) and I hate it.

Most of these people I assume are living paycheck to paycheck , I know not everyone can afford to do things in these times but I have started asking for 10 dollars cash back and giving 5 to the person checking me out and 5 to the person bagging my food. I feel like is it the least I can do. I don't even really want to be in the store let alone work there.

Again I know not everyone can afford to do something like this but if you can even if only a dollar try to help them out. They barley make above minimum wage and they really are on the front lines.

Excellent idea. Humanity is on the front lines, facing 2%.

Agreed, great idea! We’re already tipping our delivery folks above the norm; I’m sure store workers would appreciate it.

I know that at Costco we are not allowed to take tips. Accepting one is grounds for termination. Target is I believe the same.
Maybe speak to a manager. Possibly tips could be collected and pooled together for something.

Not allowed at Walmart....  They don't want them to have tips or healthcare.

    Walmart website -

Can I leave a tip for the store associate or driver that brings my order?

    • Walmart store associates do not accept tips for Pickup or Delivery, but you can show your appreciation with a positive review on your customer survey after you receive your order.

I wasn’t allowed tips at a previous job. A caterer during college, you’d think it was standard to tip. But in the 2 years I was with the company I was offered maybe twice.
We weren’t allowed for tax reasons. The owner had to declare our wages as tipped or something, and since it almost never happens it wasn’t worth it. Probably the same reason for most stores. I would guess it’s not they don’t want their employees to get a bonus, but probably some red tape tax.

A big reason is so employees don't solicit tips. i.e. when helping someone load their groceries, the employee then holds their hand out for a tip, thus making the customer feel forced to tip.

That's what we've done when they said they couldn't accept tips. The manager then said it was against store policy when I talked to him, but they were so helpful. I put a $20 down in front of him and said to just use it to buy the team some lunch & have a nice day.

So rad.  It is mind blowing that with everything going on right now that grocery store works are behind Doctors , nurses and EMTs with the really high risk of exposure. That they would still tow the line on tips ( working for a non-profit credit union for almost 10 years now has really let me forget how shitty big corporations can be )

Like I said, I just left it.

You could mail it to them with a thank you letter as well.
