Take the Long Way

edited April 2020 in The Porch
It took a couple listens but this is becoming my favorite song on the album. The musicianship/vocal arrangement is outstanding. One question.
Is there bass on this track? I have listened to it on a couple different setups and am having a hard time hearing it.

My favorite, for sure. Stone’s guitar and Lemolo’s backing vocals make it.

This is a great track! Love the guitar and drums. MFC!
  • I am surprised to see so many people so far list this as one of the lesser tracks on the album, I love it!  To me Ed sounds very Riot Act-esque on this one with a Soundgarden-esque instrumental

This was a real grower for me from the initial listen.

a ton of cool guitar sounds.
love when Ed says “time to ...resurface.”
    blistering solo.
the last 45 seconds are sublime “plant a seed in your mind”, there’s so much going on behind Ed I almost wish I could hear that better.

very likely my favorite MFC penned PJ tune

Great jam, and to be honest, was one of the couple songs on Gigaton that I enjoyed right off the bat, all of the others took some time for me to warm up to

I love this one. Very Soundgarden meets QOTSA meets Pearl Jam.

Sounds riot act era, could do without the song. I imagine this to be the typical type of song that’s not making the final album tracklist
  • This was really the one i could do the most without, especially after Seven O'clock and Never Destination.

...but with my last listen through earlier today... maybe it's starting to grow on me

The song kinda feels like a sequel song to Get Right. Matt Cameron has such an interesting song writing style.

It reminds me of Matt's solo song Time Can't Wait

  • My favourite on the album so far too.   I love all aspects of it.   The vocal arrangements are incredible.  The whole rhythm and riff work is great but the solo then leading into the final vocals "what's yours is mine" part is the best of PJ for me.   Plus, the lyrical content - very very cool...
L one this new album but I always try to take a while listening to albums because often, the euphoria of a new release can colour initial thoughts.  But TTLW is going to be one of my favourite PJ songs forever.  And gradually I am accepting that this album is up there with anything they've done before. It won't be my favourite but it is standing up alongside anything they've done.

Love this tune! First listen I wasn't sold but threw on the head phones and listened to it on a run and man its a rocker.  Definitely one of my faves on the album now.

I agree with those mentioning the Riot Act vibe to the song. Other than DOTC, I think it’s the best off the record. The mix between the off time drum pattern and Eds vocals/melodies; it makes a kind of haunting sounding rocker.

Has anybody figurer out the time pattern in this song? How many bars of 7/4s then what etc.
And he still gives his love,
    he just gives it away...
  • I think the one thing that could have elevated the song a bit was doing another chorus at the very end of the song after the ambient post-solo key change - then again that could just be me wanting the kickass jam to go on even longer lol

Really like this tune. I'm always onboard with a Matt tune or two on a new album.
"...though my problems are meaningless....that don't make them go away...."
  • Still would love to know why the bass is buried in the mix.

  • Love this song first listen. Considering what Matt and everyone went through and for Matt to pull this one from the thin air. No words but
Bravo Matt. Bravo. And this nugget is gonna make my head melt if I get to see it go down live. Wow!!! Can't wait. I need you to pull me through.
