Anyone else unable to rip the CD?

I have a macbook that gives me an error code that it doesn’t recognize the disc.  Its not too old And it can still rip other discs.  That’s the only way I would be able to get it in my library and onto my phone.  Anyone else have a way around this?

since the CD cost $19 I’d rather not have to pay extra to download it.

Is it unethical to download a FLAC version of something from a grey market source if you already own it (especially if you own it twice on Vinyl and CD)?  I feel thats more like format shifting which is legal......

Your post did make the think of one thing.  Towards the later 90s when mp3's started.  To keep people from pirating, the discs would include a program that would automatically install which would prevent copying the disc.   It was easily defeated by turning off "autoplay" on computers, so it wouldn't load the software.   There's no way they brought that back right?

Hell no. Not even if you've bought it once. If they're going to pull this crap at this point in their careers (no download code in the vinyl, locking CD ripping somehow), they're getting no sympathy or an extra buck beyond my first purchase from me.

It rips on PC's. I used the standard Windows Media Player. Had to exit out and reopen about 3 times before the song titles showed up so 12 unknown songs wouldn't rip though.

I was able to rip it with WMP and iTunes - both on a PC.

Ripped it to FLAC and MP3 first attempt with WMP.  No issues at all!
  • Artist, Album Title and Tracks won't show up when I put the CD in my Jeep player.   It's annoying.   I had planned on adding it to my iTunes as well.  guess we'll see.  I have an issue purchasing 3 different versions just so I can listen to it in different places.

The subject line made me immediately think back to 15 years ago when Sony CDs came with anti-ripping software on them. The ironic part, was that my class-action check wasn't even enough for a new CD.

One thing interesting...  Playing it in the car, on the screen which would normally show the band name, album name, genre, song titles, etc., it only shows 01/12, 02/12, etc., as if this was some CD created on the black market.  Wonder if this is related to the OP's symptom.

I didn’t try it in the car but when I ripped it with WMP it couldn’t identify the CD and I had to manually enter the song titles and album name. Not sure if that was user error or an issue with the CD.  When I loaded it into iTunes it recognized the CD and had all the info for the tracks.

Had no problem ripping on my iMac.  I never use iTunes for ripping, though, as I've found it doesn't do a very good job (songs cut short, horrible conversion, or just stop playing after a certain point, usually 3:41 which is weird).  I use fre:ac to rip into ALAC format, then MediaHub to convert to AAC & import into iTunes.  It seems like overkill but it does the job.  I'm sure I could rip straight to compressed AAC, but I've always like to rip it uncompressed first, then convert those files down.

Did you happen to purchase from Amazon? If so, you get a free digital version in Amazon Music, which you can then download and put into your other services (like Google Play)

I've been using EAC since the SHN days. I would suggest trying that. Then import the ripped files into your iTunes or whatever they're calling it now.

It just doesn't have CD-Text, which was introduced in 1996. Plenty of CDs don't have this feature, as it's optional to include. It shouldn't have any effect on whether or not the disc can be ripped.

For those bringing the song title issue when loading the CD, it's not uncommon for CDs to not come with CD-text included, and some of the database sites may be a bit slow updating to import the information when the CD is recognized.  As the CD ages, more of them will recognize the CD.  The ripping thing is likely a defect of some sort either on the computer/software or the CD itself. Perhaps try some of the different softwares suggested on here.  I'm a fan of EAC but that's a Windows solution,  I think the equivalent on Mac is XLD.

Thanks for all the replies everyone.  Guess I’ll need to google up on EAC and the other software options.

i guess I gotta keep things in perspective.  I can’t give this issue more attention than I’m giving to helping my kids resolve their school-issued laptop’s software issues.

Yes you can. Many schools are just doing pass/pass anyway. Even if they aren’t telling parents that. Get this figured out first!

I bought the vinyl.....no download code.
So, I purchased a digital copy. Had problems even playing that in my car.
Burned the digital copy to a CD, then ripped MY CD to my own digital copy and it worked fine.
    Don't figure.
