the first verse is different from all the lyrics i find on the web.
Unsealed
On a porch a letter sat
Then you said ’i wanna leave it again’
Once I saw her on a beach of weathered sand
And on the sand I wanna leave it again... yeah
On a weekend I wanna wish it all away yeah...
And they called and I said that I want what I said
And then I call out again
And the reason oughta leave her calm I know
I said ’i don’t know whether
I’m the boxer or the bag’
Ah yeah ehh....
Can you see them
Out on the porch
But they don’t wave
I see them round the front way yeah
And I know I don’t want to stay...
Make me cry <guitar solo>
Ooooh I see
I don’t know there’s something else
I wanna drum it all away
Oh I said I don’t, I don’t know whether I’m a boxer or the bag
Ah yeah ehh....
Can you see them
Out on the porch
But they don’t wave
I see them round the front way yeah
And I know I don’t want to stay
I don’t wanna stay (2x)
Don’t
Don’t wanna
Oh... yeah... oooh...
everywhere i find the lyrics on the internet they show these same lyrics. the versions of the song i have though sing a 1st verse entirely different from this. does anyone know why this is?

I think thats ok, but it also has, in my opinion, a poetic meaning:
"Not sure if i am the boxer or the bag" is a magnificent poetic figure,...the boxer is a man that practices the popular sport caled "Box" and the bag is the object that a boxer uses in his training...u know, to beat it again and again for hours...Its a beautiful way to describe the feeling of confusion around any human tragedy, when if you have a minimal consciousness of how selfish we are when it comes to survive the pain around us, you realise that you dont know if you are the boxer or the bag...It makes me think about an argentine author called alejandro dolina, in one of his books he says that "life, sadly, its not like a theatre or a movie, were al the pieces of the drama can come perfectly together at the end of the story...in real life, we rarely get a prize for our good acts or a punishment for our daily cruelty...life ends, often suddenly, without letting us really know what we reallly deserved through it..."......
that makes me also fly to cropduster, but that´s not for this thread, of course
fede
Ed just makes the lyrics up as he goes along when they play it live.
definatly not studio lyrics
Unsealed on the way some letter said
I don’t want to ever feel this way again, no
On the wayside, on the front some letter said
That I’ll never see my brother alive again, no
And I try to obliterate it all
After time but the memory keeps dragging me down
And I wonder bout the reasons he was sent
He’s comin, he’s comin home in a box or a bag
Yeah, can you see them out on the porch, yeah
But they don’t wave
I see them round the front way
And I know that I know, I don’t wanna stay
On the sea, I’d like to just wish it all away, yeah
And I tried and I called, and I coulda left a message
But no one was there, no.
Talked to my dad, he was worse than me
I couldn’t asked why his son’s comin home in a box or a bag
Yeah, can you see them out on the porch, yeah
But they don’t wave
I see them round the front way
And I know that I know, I don’t wanna stay, O lord
I don’t wanna stay
I’d like to stay
I don’t wanna stay, don’t wanna go, yeah.
i think you are definately right on that, most songs i like i couldn't tell you what the lyrics are but it's either the vocal melody or the chords or tempo of the song that are the hook for me, Eddie can really project a lot of passion and emotion in his voice and usually the guitar solo's convey this as well, that is a shit hot combination which in my opinion is one of the reasons pj will be remembered as 1 of The great bands, u can over analyze the lyrical content of a song and find you have got it so wrong, but u can't not feel the power and emotion of a good track, i suppose that is one of the differences between this sort of amazing music and the emotionless muzak shite all the kids are listening too.

Out on the porch, yeah, but they don't wave
I see them, round the front way, yeah...
And I know and I know I don't want to stay
Make me cry...
I see, ooh...I don't know why there's something else
I wanna drum it all away
Oh, I said, I don't, I don't know a-where there's a boxer or the bag'
Ah yeah...can you see them?
Out on the porch, yeah, but they don't wave
I see them, round the front way, yeah...
And I know, and I know, I don't wanna stay alone...
I don't wanna stay...yeah...
I don't wanna stay... (2x)
I don't, don't wanna, oh...yeah...ooh...ohh...
