You gotta listen with a really good set of headphones

Crappy earbuds won't do the trick. Get a good set of studio monitor headphones and you'll hear all sorts of different sounds coming through the whole album.

Sure. They are some old school Sony Studio Monitors from my days working in radio and recording. Sounds totally different than todays earbuds.

I did that with my first listen. If my first impression of an album isn’t positive, it usually doesn’t change (looking at you, Lightning Bolt).

I listened with my daughter’s JLab JBuds Air (cheap airpod knockoffs) and it sounded incredible.

Listened through the surround system first via Chromecast Audio, and it sounded stellar.

Looking forward to bringing the soundstage a little closer with my M50x's & Fiio X3 once I rip the CD to FLAC.   :rock_on:

How are Airpods quality wise? I have no idea really.

For a light weight throw in your pocket option I think they sound really good.  I’m so happy I bought a pair and the fact that you can charge them multiple times in the case is a real convenience.  They’ll never compare to over the ear headphones but they’re not really made to compete with that end of the market.

Lucky enough that my first listen was on some great headphones.  Blew me away.  The atmosphere is amazing.  I can't replicate it in the car with the CD, or even on the turntable.

It does sound pretty awesome through Beats Studio 3 headphones. Jeff is a beast!

How good is the end of Retrograde blasting through some kickarse headphones? Good phones remind you how awesome a job Josh Evans did. So much space and clarity.

My personal preference will always be good loudspeakers whenever possible, the emotional impact of music FOR ME is diminished when the physiological side of feeling the low end al over your body is missing. Currently using Acoustic Energy Aelite 3 towers (UK) with dual Paradigm Servo 15v2 subs handling the low end - typically crossover at 50Hz when listening to stereo digital.

I agree. My first listen was through my phone speakers while I was watching the kids and I had to turn it off.

My second listen was through a set of Bowers and Wilkins P5s. From start to finish, non stop, just laying on my bed staring at the ceiling. Immersion in the music was so deep.
