Gonna need to hear these! I bet there are some gems. How long after an album before you start usually hearing tracks that didnt make the album?

Considering we haven’t heard backspacer b-sides yet, I think we have a little while

  • Yeah, unfortunately they don't seem to be as generous as they used to be when it comes to B-sides.

To be fair Backspacer and Lightning Bolt didn't have but 6 decent songs each so it's kind of hard to get b-sides when half the album isn't that good.  I think Gigaton will have some tracks out there!

What was the last album that had bsides?  Riot Act?  I don't think Avacado, Backspacer, or Lightning Bolt had b-sides.   I assumed they were saving them for a Lost Dogs 2 kind of thing.  Plus there's whatever songs they abandoned from when BoB was producing the album, but they went another way.

Avocado had B-sides (let it ride, cold confession) and i heard they had around 20 some songs for Gigaton... so there are most definitely some out there. Of the Earth has never been on an album either...

Yeah, what he said. Those are outtakes not meant for mass consumption. Don't get me wrong, it's wonderful they exist but I wish they were still pumping out 7" singles like they used to.

Avacado had left over songs, they weren't really bsides.  IE pearl jam hasn't put out singles with unrelreased songs in quite some time.    The songs form Avacado were leaked.. which is a little different.

I would assume they have an album or two's worth of leftover tracks at this point.   Probably keeping them for a rainy day.  Lost Dogs 2 or something.

Just a pet peeve of mine as a record collector. B-sides are b-sides, outtakes, bonus tracks, demos, working mix, are those specific things.

I get that its common to refer to non album tracks as b-sides though. Just drives me bonkers sometimes.

No, Josh Evans states that there are not other songs mixed.

Did you finish any other songs during the recording sessions?
They’re always working on something. It’s hard to say, because it’s not really done until it’s out. There are all kinds of things sitting on hard drives — from pieces of ideas to something one of the guys might consider a finished song. As far as mixing the record, these were the only 12 songs we mixed. Sometimes you have to capture these moments. If “River Cross” had sat around for another four years in its two-thirds-finished state, it probably never would have gotten finished, because the world would have changed. Creatively, they’re looking forward right now — that’s what’s exciting for them.

It doesn't necessarily work that way.  Sometimes things get left off because they don't fit thematically or for some other reason.  "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" were written for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band but left off because they had already been put out as a single.  Those are two of the greatest songs ever written and yet they're arguably "B sides."

So, you never know.  Was "Sad" worse than every song on Binaural or "Hold On" worse than every song on Vs.?  I don't think so.  I'm confident that there are B sides better than "Let The Records Play" that, for whatever reason, the band just didn't think fit on Lightning Bolt.

haha me too... for me a b-side is always the extra track(s) on a single.  Something I really miss in the modern era.
