Gidget = Given to Fly

OK..this is going to sound waaaaay out there, but I'm watching this 1959 surf movie with Sandra Dee...and the Kahuna (Robert Stack?) says that surfing feels like flying (well, Gidget says that too)...and then he says that he lives the life of a surf bum because of all the CHAINS he sees on everything (like when he fought in the war)...there's too many chains...
So...I think that Gidget is the inspiration for GTF...obviously when the Kahuna was in the war, he would have been under attack from the faceless enemy...he has a pet bird, which flies, he finds "relief" from chains when he surfs, he stands with is arms wide open when he surfs... so add all that to bits of Ed's own surf life and voila! Given to Fly...
Spot in the sky? The other character named "Moondoggie". The moon is in the sky... and then when the band is touring, they fly...and I think the last bit of the song refers to that - they have to fly around the world and sometimes at night, when the lights flash on the plane and can appear to be "a strange spot in the sky"...
(and no, you can't have what I'm having! )
So Ed? You like the old surf movies? Gidget is supposed to be the original one...

"Surfing is out of this world. You can't imagine the thrill of the shooting the curl. It positively surpasses every living emotion I've ever had."
I just finished watching Gidget too!!! Cliff Robertson was Kahuna and James Darren was Moondoggie.
Ahhh I want to be Gidget and Eddie could be Moondoggie and oops oh well never mind , , ,
So yeah....GTF is semi-autobiographical AND about the big Kahuna...and Ed maybe saw himself wanting a Big Kahuna lifestyle (surf bum, no responsibilities, living in a shack on the beach - that's Way Out fabulous!). Or maybe Ed was called "Gidget" when he started hanging at the beach in San Diego....of possibly "Bidget"...
Anyway, the bit where Gidget is begging her parents for the last $21.50 for the surfboard (which was $75) and she's "But I've got to! I've simply GOT to buy that surfboard!" my husband laughed because that's how I was when I made up my mind that I wanted the Laird SUP back in April....sure wish it was $75, though!
Anyway, yeah...GTF - definite Gidget connection!
Ed, do I win a prize?
TOO WEIRD!! :shock: :P
