Present Tense

My fav song because of the lyrics - reminds me to live in the here and now. As a former counsellor, I can speak volumes of the troubles people get into when we don't.

  • it's a great song the lyrics are up there with the best

do you see the way that tree bends?
    does it inspire?
leaning out to catch the sun's rays
    a lesson to be applied
are you getting something out of this all encompassing trip?
you can spend your time alone, redigesting past regrets, oh
or you can come to terms and realize
you're the only one who can't forgive yourself, oh
makes much more sense to live in the present tense
have you ideas on how this life ends?
checked your hands and studied the lines
have you the belief that the road ahead ascends off into the light?
seems that needlessly it's getting harder
to find an approach and a way to live
are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?
you can spend your time alone redigesting past regrets, oh
or you can come to terms and realize
you're the only one who cannot forgive yourself, oh
makes much more sense to live in the present tense
  • Beautifully written.

Learn from the past, but don't dwell on it. Take your expericences and live for today.

It is always best to live in the present tense.
Oh he fills it up with the love of a girl...

yeah, it's beautiful, but when the past becomes all that's left of someone, present tense may sometimes seem as a punishment... i guess it's a life long struggle

It also, is my favorite song mainly because of the lyrics (and how much it fucking rocks live). The lyrics are just so true, and it's stopped me from many messy situations.

    Gotta see it as hope...

You live in the past all you have is regret, you live in the future all you have is fear and uncertainty. You live in the present and there's something there, something you can effect.

    that's so true. well said

i think many of us would be much better off if we just accepted that some of the things we so desperately want to control are simply out of our hands. we're so intent on moulding the world to suit us, not the other way around. we're the only creatures on earth that do that. we're also the only creatures on earth that will voluntarily kill themselves. co-incidence? i don't know, but i do believe we take a small step towards killing a sacred place in ourselves every time we try to hold the world in our hands and neglect the very heart which feeds life to those hands.
if you love somebody, set them free. if somebody loves you, don't fuck up

true, and when you do that, then you'll have a lot less regrets about the past.

I know the feeling, I have been there. At first the present may seem cruel or even hurt. But time goes on and you figure out ways to make everything better. Eventually, that person will be remembered for the good times and you will smile and the tears will stop.

  • First Pearl Jam song that i heard, a glimpse into what is now my favorite band of all time.
  • The lyrics are incredible, but the first thing that shocked me from this song was Eddie´s voice, specially in the end...
...can´t wear my mask, your first my last...
  • this song started it all for me...it helped me overcome a lot of issues and no song has had a stronger impact on my life. to me this song represents the most fundamental lesson Pearl Jam has taught me. it really does make much more sense to live in the present tense.
“I don't know what this means. I don't think it means anything.”
    -Eddie Vedder
  • This is my favorite song when played live. the studio is great too, but the way they rock the guitar in the live versions just make it so special.

Makes me think about life in general. "do you have a belief that the road ahead, ascends off into the light" Just puts people's beliefs in check. Live your life as if you think or believe that life matters and that there is an after life or some salvation.

This is why PJ is so head and shoulders better than other bands. You look at this website and there are about 35 different songs that people claim as favorites. very rare indeed. Each song reaches people different and they can relate to it. Lyrically no one matches their talents.
    "Wave to all my friends....yeah!"
  • this is one of my favourites as well , it's all combined so perfectly, the lyrics, the music, the spaces between the melody and the singing. Oh, Eddie's singing... It sounds like he's singing it because he knows your story, and he knows you're listening.
I'm a very optimistic person, and I find that song really beautiful, it puts your life in perspective. No regrets about the past, focus on the now, and what you can build now for the future. Life can always get better , if you try :)
Wish they played it more often

Have you seen the video from Jone's Beach? beautiful moment

"Do you see the way that tree bends?"

This line always gets me. It reminds me to look around and take it all in everyday ya know. Take a look at the stars at night and remind yourself how small you are. Look out at the ocean and think about whats on the other side.

Again... just an amazing song. Inspirational
  • hey guys, this is the best track from no code album!i hope to hear it live someday...
