If you want appreciation for Black, youve come to the right place ;)

"All five horizons, revolved around her soul
as the Earth to the sun..
Now the air I tasted and breathed
    has taken a turn....."

black, what else needs to be said but "BLACK"

    a classic!
  • No matter what the guys release, or come up with next, this will ALWAYS be my favorite. There is so much emotion and passison in the lyrics and in Eddie's voice! Can never be duplicated!

    You think you need
And when you think more than you want
    Your thoughts begin to bleed."

Eddie Vedder has the ability to convey emotion through music
like no one ever has I think.

Its like in "Release"... the emotion as he is singing about his dead
father is so raw it has actually brought me to tears.
    Its palpable.

    Yes, that all consuming love/lust
    where you are constantly aching
and you feel like if you cant see/ hear/ touch
that other person you will die.
You feel like a junkie who needs a hit
but its a love hit instead.

    So, um...yeh :D
  • "When blood rolls down my finger tips,

Im lost...thought I knew it by heart *puzzled*

Anyway I love when he says -

"And all I taught her was everything..
I know she gave me all that she wore"

That line has soooo many layers to it .

I really think Eddie has a few things to teach me as well :)
  • I heard once that ed's lyrics for 'black' came from mia zapata (gits vocals) being killed. I also read in the paper (contra costa times) that thay caught the guy like, a year ago or something. But hands down, one of the best songs i've ever heard. Plus the way the band does it live now is PRICELESS!!
That's one more time around... and there is not a sound. . . he's lying dead, clutching benjamins never put the money down

    He's stiffening. . . we're all whistling

    A man we'll soon forget.

Friendly FYI: Mia Zapata was killed July '93; I graduated from high school that year & was living near the neighborhood. The killer, Jesus Mezquia, was recently sentenced to 37 years in prison. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/171551_zapata01.html He's 49, so I guess that's adequate.

I agree with you that the way they perform it live these days is priceless. I like the way the crowd sings it. Nice that Ed has essentially given it to his fans, especially since he once confronted hikers asking them not to sing it. It is such a wonderful gift.

  • yeah, pansy pearl i was wondering about that...I thought I had read somewhere a while back about him encountering fans who were singing it and he asked them not to...do you know where that article is that mentions that?

Words are just too feeble to describe what this song is for me. I wish I could know exactly who or what inspired the lyrics and how he felt after he wrote it.

He wrote it in high school about a girlfriend is what Ive ALWAYS read.
If its true then imagine so young a mind creating such beauty from the
well of pain he must have had inside of him.

And yes some thing are beyond mere feeble words, agreed.
Trying to describe the impact of Black on ones soul is one of them :)

    Pearl Jam - Black.

For me, the most complete song ever written, from incredible lyrics, tempo and rythmn. I actually don't believe anyone who says they don't like it. Even a hardened punk-rocker would be brought to tears.

Live is also incredible. Live on two legs version is awe-inspiring.

My favourite notion of the song is when he changes the lyrics of the chorus, firstly it is 'my bitter hands, shake beneath the clouds'
Secondly it goes 'my bitter hands, shed on broken glass'

The guy is a genius, they all are.

    Peace

Black is very special song for me. This is the first Pearl Jam I've heard, it's been about 2 years ago. I've listened to it after the recommendation of my penfriend, he introduced it to me as "best song ever". So after I listened to it I've been so delighted. I truly find it very great. Lately I've got hooked up on Pearl Jam but Black is still my favorite! Both the lyrics and music are splendid! Sorry for this type of “blah-blah” message, maybe some of you will find it boring, but I couldn’t resist of posting it!

i agree black is such a multi layered song. i bet just about everyone can relate to the lyrics. i know personally i have felt that way at one point in my life. such raw emotion and vulnerability.
  • I love this song, and I'm not going to bother explain why because so many others have already... but anyone who comes on here and says something like, "Oh, you just like it because its 1 of their more popular songs... go listen to blah blah blah... then you can be a real Pearl Jam fan" anyways, I know there's assholes like that on this board, so be warned...

    This bothers me as well.
Two of my all time fave songs are
Release and Black .. just because they
happen to both be on Ten Im still
    making no apologies for it.
  • There is oh so much to be said about this song...yet I find just one word that comes to mind...

    Timeless.
