Bass Interface - where to start?

I’m trying to look into an interface so I can pick up my bass again. As I understand it, an interface will let me mix my bass signal in w/ whatever song I’m playing. My goal is to be able to play all this through headphones without disturbing anyone. 

Does anyone have experience and or recommendations? 

I’m pretty green with this stuff. Any advice is appreciated. 

Edit: I have iTunes on my PC, and an iPhone. A coworker told me an iRig is the way to for an iPhone, but if that is only compatible w/ a Mac, I feel like that wouldn’t be my best value.
