What is cropduster about? Is it political? I`ve never quite understood that song.. And it`s so cool
we were but stones, your light made us stars

I think it's about birth and death and birth again. In the first verse he sets up the metaphor, in the second verse he applies it to today.
He uses the metaphor of a plant (seed to seedling root to stem), and then compares it with a human (swallowed the seeds on my deathbed, dig a hole in... the garden), so he keeps the analogy alive, talking about the dirt, the plant, the seeds, the death, the rebirth from the seeds.
The second verse, is political, and I think it's about suicide bombers, and the lies they are told about death...
Knowing Ed's politics I wouldn't be surprised if the chorus was originally "I fought the world, turns out the world fought me".... but it reads "I thought the world, turns out the world thought me"... this, way it talks of the selfishness of the individual who thinking he the center of the universe... when really, he just a part of something bigger... I think this alludes to the selfishness of the suicide bombers and would probably be the reason Ed wouldn't have gone with "I fought the world, turns out the world fought me".
The last part: "let the fluency set it down, there's an upside of down" is about the seed being planted and watered, and how it's not a bad thing.
Anyway that's my take, here's the lyrics:
Light green to green, dark green, brown..
Every life is falling down
Brown to black, it's coming back
Dies to be part of the ground
Seed to seedling, root to stem
Eyes, no eyes, there's no difference,...
Every life is looking in
Swallowing seeds on the deathbed,...
Dig a hole in,... the garden.
Everyone is practicing,...
But this world's an accident.
I was the fool because I thought
I thought the world
Turns out the world thought me
It's all the other way round
We're upside down
Daddy's gone up flames,..
But this ain't no movie
This ain't no book you can close
When the big lie hits your eye.
Everybody's practicing,....
Our world's an accident
I was the fool because I thought
Let the fluency set it down.
There's an upside of down.
The moon is rolling around.
