What songs have you heard live that made you change your opinion about them?

As a distraction to all of the gutted talk and waiting for tickets and after seeing some talk about how Getaway does not work well live it made me curious. What songs have you experienced live that totally changed your opinion of them both for better and for worse?

Smile never really did anything for me until I saw Ed explain what the lyrics meant to him.

The recorded version of Low Light is among my favourite PJ songs, but I feel like there's something slightly off about it live and it's made me question whether I really love it as a song, or if it's just nostalgia or the vibe of the recording. Counter to that, I've seen Light Years twice and, while the recorded version is great, each time live has brought new meaning to it, for me, and I love it more.

  • Low Light - The studio version sounds flat to me. The live version is awesome.
Small Town - I love both the studio and live versions but there's something about the live version (particularly Ed's electric guitar) that makes the song come alive more and have a totally different feel.

Light Years is my white whale. Absolutely love that song. It’s awesome on the LP and the live versions I hear in XM are incredible.

Improved my outlook live:  DTE, Insignificance, Severed Hand, Inside Job

Weaker live:  Force of Nature ... Getaway ... Alone post-94 (maybe if they played it more often it would sound tighter)

I had written Jeremy off entirely until Wrigley 1 2016.

I didn't NOT like I Got Shit before that show, but my opinion of that song also improved that night.

Same here. I still don't like the album version, but I really enjoyed seeing it live.

Lightning Bolt. It was rough at Wrigley that first time but over the years it has grown on me.

I feel nearly every song is better live then on the album , just my opinion. Thread started with Getaway but the few version I have heard on the boots is better than the album version to me.

That said I am also the person that loves "Sirens" "The End" and "Come Back"

Given to Fly - Liked it on the album, but really love it live
Jeremy - while I like the song, it was probably my least favorite on Ten. Live though it's an awesome song with everyone singing along

All Night at Memphis 2014. Wow! Didn’t really care for it before, but that’s all changed.

Lightning Bolt live helped me to appreciate that song a lot more... Sirens on the other hand has the opposite effect on me, l like the studio, but feel like it sucks the energy out of the crowd mid-set, should be reserved for like a second set opener

Not even the 2000 touring band version? That’s my favorite by far

Dont remember that version off the top of my head. I just know I've never heard a live version I like nearly as much as the studio. Could just be Neil's style vs Mike's for that song.

Saw Can't Deny Me at Fenway and it clicked in a way that the studio version still doesn't for me.

I liked Insignificance well enough on Binaural but seeing it live pushed it onto the short list of my favorite PJ songs.
