Question about the song "U"

I know the song "U" was written during the Yield period, and I believe Ed was still married to his now ex-wife. So I first assumed that the song was written about her. As I began to listen to the words, I realized that some of the things he was saying about this person was not something most people would want in a person. He talks about her guile, which is, by definition, a deceitful nature. He also says, "it might be the way you don't sympathize". Is Ed singing sacastically about his now ex-wife? Maybe their relationship was already beginning to weaken? I know they divorced in 2000. Could anyone please give me some insight on this?

No, but Ed said it was written on a car trip. He said if the trip had been any longer the song would have been more complex.

The ex-wife theory is a good one though. Then again it could just be a general love song, but like you said it has some sarcasm.
