Yield CD Booklet "Harmony Not a Through Road"

Since Yield came out I alway enjoyed the picture inside the cd booklet with the Harmony sign (I made a copy of it and have it posted in my work cube). I believe the picture was taken by Jeff Ament in a backroad in Northern California.

The picture is a soothing reminder of the landscape and picketline fence that I would see trout fishing as a young adult and brings back great memories. For years I always interpreted the picture as saying the feeling of harmony is not a through road. Basically nothing comes easy or without resistance.

Yesterday I looked at the picture and noticed the sign for Harmony has a arrow pointed to the left and the Not a Through Road sign is for the road straight ahead. Maybe harmony is found if you take a left instead of staying on the current road?

All these years intrepeting the picture one way and now I have another. Thoughs on what the picture represents? Regardless, I love the angle the sun was at creating shadows across the road and hills.

Great post. Just when I thought we've dissected all aspects of this album, you've raised an interesting topic.

I like this interpretation based on the topic you've raised:

We can easily turn and go the easy route...live a carefree life.

    "What are you running from?
    Taking pills to get along
Creating walls to call your own
    So no one catches you?
Drifting off and doing all the things...
    That we... all do"

Or, we can continue on, face the realities of life and try to make it through the hard road ahead...hopefully, for the better.

"You've got time... you've got time to escape
There's still time... it's no crime to escape
It's no crime to escape... it's no crime to escape
    There's still time, so escape
    It's no crime, crime.."

Q: I've noticed in the Yield lyric sheets included with the CD that there are "hidden" yield signs in some of the pictures. Is this something Jeff Ament thought of?

    A: Sure.

They are on most of the pages.

  • theres a yield sign in ervy pic?
how can there be a yield sign in the middle of the ocean, or on top of a mountain lol?
  • Source:

First pic: It's on the right tower

MFC: It's above the head of the guy on the left on the motorcycle

Push me Pull me: It's on the sign that's at the right

Do the Evolution: In the grass at the right of the tent

Faithfull: One of the windows at the top in the middle is triangular
Chinese restaurant pic:It's the triangle on the middle thing

Brain of J: On Jack's shirt

Low Light: On the tail of the left bird

Whishlist: On the opened mailbox on the thing that's sticking out, it's hard to see, it's upside down

Middle pic: In the water, the mountain reflecting on the left side

Given to Fly: Ok...it's on the statue's torso. No I'm not crazy! If you stare at it for a couple of decates, you see a slight discoloration on its torso...

Swimming Eddie: In the water, on the very left side

In Hiding: This is the only one that I am incapable to see. It's supposedly on the rocks at the bottom right...

Pilate: In the sky, on the right side about at the same hight as Jeff's hand(I see 2 of them actually)

No Way: Ok it's in the background, more on the left side. See it? Good.

Mountain pic: It's on the fence. One of the pics is triangular, on the left side.

Red dot: On the left side at the bottom of the wall on a really weird angle

All those yesterdays: On the right side, there's a tombstone with a yield sign at the top of it

Last pic: On the right side of the path, you follow the road and you'll see a little triangle on the side of it.

The first post on the old YIELD thread would have cleared this up instantly. :(
