betterman

this song i think pretty much sums up a lot of relationships at some point in their existence. i know thats so true for my mom and dad. every time i hear this song i just have to think of my mom, i should play it for her some day and see if she reacts to the lyrics.

  • I recall reading that Vedder wrote this song about his mother and his step-father, and the lyrics make sense in that context. But in the DVD "Touring Band" when PJ is doing this song at the end Vedder starts adding more lyrics in (as he often does with songs), and they make it sound as if some woman he loved didn't want him. It went something like:

    "I don't wanna believe...I don't wanna believe...you're not in love with me..."

It added more in from there (I can't remember exactly what he said), but for me it altered the way I interpreted the song significantly.
"Speaking as a child of the nineties..."

It's been real, and it's been fun -- but it hasn't been real fun.

Ed!!! Bring back the stage dives!!!

Today I was listening to it and the way Ed says "can't find a betterman" sounds like "can't find a vedderman", which would make sense because Ed's real father died, and she can't find him.

i'm all for everyone having their own interpretation of songs...and I'm not trying to burst your bubble...but this isn't a very good interpretation of the song/lyric.

And no one sings me lullabyes
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky....
