Name a Pj song that applied to your life

at the right time...... and tell us why.

For me there are several but, i am gonna choose Betterman right now, because I have been on a tear about my ex husband here the last couple of days (with good reason i just found out that the fecker may have given me hepatitis, nothing positive, and its rarely sexually transmitted, but the sources for exposure are nil other than some post breakup/pre-divorce sex with him in 2004)

This song fit me so perfectly when the record came out, I had one of those "wow" moments when i heard it....
Sometimes a song can speak a truth about your life, ya know?

I used to listen to it over and over again...

Waitin’, watchin’ the clock, it’s four o’clock, it’s got to stop
Tell him, take no more, she practices her speech
As he opens the door, she rolls over...
Pretends to sleep as he looks her over
She lies and says she’s in love with him, can’t find a better man...
She dreams in color, she dreams in red, can’t find a better man...
Can’t find a better man (2x)
Ohh...

Talkin’ to herself, there’s no one else who needs to know...
She tells herself, oh...
Memories back when she was bold and strong
And waiting for the world to come along...
Swears she knew it, now she swears he’s gone
She lies and says she’s in love with him, can’t find a better man...
She dreams in color, she dreams in red, can’t find a better man...
She lies and says she still loves him, can’t find a better man...
She dreams in color, she dreams in red, can’t find a better man...
Can’t find a better man (2x)
Yeah...

She loved him, yeah...she don’t want to leave this way
She feeds him, yeah...that’s why she’ll be back again
Can’t find a better man (3x)
Can’t find a better...man...
Ohh...ohh...
Uh huh... (5x)
Ohh...
Lost in the moonlight,
Heather

"...Like an angel, I live alone
I'm not livin' what was promised
I am close but can't enjoy
Oh, I'm not dyin'
Oh, I'm so tortured, 'cause I see all
Tortured, and all I cannot do
Tortured, all I should have done....
I am far from glorified...."

  • Im sure alot of people have lived Footsteps at one time or another (not me in the slightest but im sure people can relate)
I think I can relate to Light Years when ive lost a couple of family members, it makes me cry but feel good at the same time to play afterwards.
Its been 8 years, but I still believe...PJ in NZ 06!

Who You Are is a big one... other than being my name, it has put a spin on things for me and hte way i view the world these days. its a long story but one nite in particular it has done more for me than any other song and for that i am so greatful... not to mention that No Code is so inspiring that i would not be who i am, or where i am with out it.

I was running this morning, and during a runner's high I was listening to the right song, "Given to Fly."

cause when the sun don't shine, fuck it, nothing worth frowning over so long as the clock is still ticking...

so this applies always... but especially now, as i am apart from the woman who has ahold of my heart, and also one of my best friends in a hospital-induced coma due to a car-crash that was not his fault and killed his co-worker who was driving [also not his fault]...

Well, first off I want to say that one of the things I love about Pearl Jam is they leave the interpretations of songs up to the listener and not ruin the experience of album listening.

Well, "Light Years" takes me back to a part of my life when I met my first true love. I was in 8th grade she was in 9th. She lived 30 min. away, and it was hard at the time and I hardly got to see her. We learned so much from eachother while we were together, but she had so many problems at the time that she drifted away from me, and then she moved. It seemed like as time went on, our distance became a length measuring in light years. But one day, it occured to me that I couldn't be stuck on here, that I had to live and go on without her, and I eventually did. I hope noone laughs at this interpretation, bc Light Years has made me cry before.

  • Footsteps is me really badly when i have been in my deepest darkest depression...."I've got scratches all over my arms one for each day since i fell apart" the best line from that song.....

"i got ID" for me is like a perfect verbal portrait of me at 17/18 and an experience i had in that time period..

Pj can really write some stuff that just speaks to my soul and i find comfort and solace in.....

Light Years is the song that applies to me the most.
  • Maybe I'll sound like the tool of the bunch, but def. "Black". once again like someone up there not getting into specifics
"i wanna rock and roll **all night**, and part of everyday"
  • Wishlist, Alive, Rear View Mirror, I Am Mine, Black... plenty more have applied at one moment or another.

I suppose if I have to really pick its the simple poetry of lyrics like "I know I was born and I know that I'll die, the in between is mine" that sum things up so well.

  • PearlJams songs, lyricly, are the only band that in my 35 years of being a music lover, that have consistantly spoken to me in a deep way.. that made me feel like on some level, someonje else "gets" what i am feeling and been thru......So many songs.....just click with something inside me... release, footsteps, i got Id, indifference, wash, breaker fall, betterman, rear view mirror, in my tree, present tense, hail hail, jeremy, daughter, animal, I'm open, alone, thumbing my ways, parting ways, mfc, wishlist, red mosquito, sometimes, in hiding, you are, black, let me sleep, its christmas time, fucking up... , i guess, if there was a movie of my life it would have a two CD soundtrack and it would all be PJ.. at least i can say dirty frank wouldnt be on that list. hehe

  • A few years ago my girlfriend and I left everything behind to move to another country for work. It had been a tense few weeks before we left because our relationship was still comparitively new to what we each had with our own friends and family and we knew this would be the ultimate test of how well we could function together being in a strange place with no friends, family, or money. I was listening to "Ten" as the plane crossed the Caribbean Sea and "Oceans" began to play on my headphones as I felt her head on my shoulder. I looked from the window of the plane to her and realized that it was the first time in so long that she was actually at ease. Every time I hear "Oceans" I think of how I wouldn't have been able to survive without her. The complete lyrics deserve to be posted...

    "Oceans"

    hold on to the thread
    the currents will shift
    guide me towards you
    know something's left
and we're all allowed to dream
of the next time we touch..........

    you don't have to stray
    two oceans away
    waves roll in my thoughts
    hold tight the ring...
    the sea will rise...
    please stand by the shore...
    I will be...
    I will be...
    there once more.........

  • Four main songs come to mind here

"ALL OR NONE" - Dunno if you saw my post in the main thread, I've got my own interpretation that may or may not be along the lines of Eddie's "intentions" for the song, but going through a very rough and complicated friendship/relationship patch with a girl, this song is somewhat comforting, even though it hurts a bit listening to it, but that's only normal

"LIGHT YEARS" - When losing someone. Beautiful song. But doesn't only apply to people who have passed on. Even when I just really miss or long for someone.

"OCEANS" - Relaxes me all the time. As others have said, I listen to it alot especially on holiday

"FOOTSTEPS" - When I feel bad about life and everything's just going so wrong and it doesn't seem like anything's going to get better. Also a song I listen to when thinking about things that have happened in the past..the events leading up to and on from a particular situation or event..

Where do I begin? I guess with Ten. I was 17 back then. ALL the songs applied. It was like, finally someone has the balls to sing about what's really going on our america's youth life.

I mean how many of you knew a Jeremy? Or a guy that went through what Ed did in Alive. Leash... If you played the 10 Cd & flipped through our year book. You could pick out any of us that those songs were about.

VS, No code, vitology, Yield, Binaural, Riot Act they came out right as I was going through those experiences.

It seems where ever I am at the moment their published, that's what's going on with me.

Which kind of scares me. I hope the next album isn't about corporate america.

and i hope my pet pig sprouts wings and sings pink floyd while flying around my living room ;)

what else could it possibly be about? worldwide suicide..

That song could mean many things, but it is very powerful and very intense for me. I can seriously relate to that song on several levels. Sources say that the song is written about Neil Young, and that makes a lot of sense as it fits him to a tee. down deep I feel it fits me as well.
  • darthvedder88darthvedder88 Posts: 1,023
I never thought of that interpretation for Off He Goes, it being about Neil Young.

I will have to say several, but black Is the one that stands the most with my life, as I let the love of my life go several years ago and lost him forever. I can't forget him even though I have moved on. Its like a hole in my heart forever, with no mending. Nothing I can do to stop the blank space there.
The song is Perfect too for us, and ironically, he's the one who introduced me to PJ way back.

    (miss you tim)

I recently thought I met the woman of my life..She gave me so many reasons to beleive that and even was happy with me and told me she thought the same...5 days later....she said..I cannot do this,....I want to just dedicate to my career""" and told me she never wanted to see me again.just like friends maybe....aghhhhhh
