is it "young girl, violins, center of her own attention."
or "young girl, violence, center of her own attention." ???
I've seen it both ways and I can't figure it out becuase I only have Vs. on an LP so it doesnt have the lyrics

they both make sense to me

Eddie intended it to be open to interpretation, it is neither violins or violence.

doesn't the paper sleeve for the album have some of the lyrics? mine does.

anyway, it says: "young girl...violins (ence)..."

it's a play on words...the song is about a struggle between a young girl and her mother and the effects the struggle has on the young girl...the exact nature of the struggle isn't clearly/neatly defined for the listener...instead a general sense of the struggle is hit upon...the "violins(ence)" lyric indicates one aspect of the struggle is violence that the daughter experiences at the hand of her mother...but since the play on words muddles the meaning, it's open to interpretation...which I believe is generally one of Ed's intentions and why the band doesn't publish lyrics beyond the semi-cryptic offerings in all of their album liner notes.

And no one sings me lullabyes
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky....
  • I like to think its 'volence' instead of 'violins'. I think it goes with the lyrics a bit better
All I want is the truth.
  • I agree that Ed intends for the lyrics to be open to interprutation, but the lyrics in the notes say "violins." Wether or not that clears anything up, i don't know...

yes it does go better and it would be easier to interp it that way but pearl jam always does things the hard way so I'm almoust 100% sure it's violins...becouse it DOESN'T make sense
    trust me I'm listless...
"I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy."
"I may be drunk but at least I'm not insane."
    "I don't have a drinking problem 'Cept when I can't get a drink."
