Vinyl Peeps.... what do you consider the best sounding version of TEN?

My first PJ show was back in 1991 in Omaha, NE.  At the time, my friends and I had no idea who PJ was and were there to see the Smashing Pumpkins and RHCP do their thing. We were up front on the barricade for PJ's set and from the first note, we were hooked. Even got to meet the guys out back after their set and got some flyers signed. I went out and bought TEN on CD and cassette the very next day after school and still have them. I joined the Ten Club by mail a week or so later (and have just recently rejoined after a long hiatus) and remember getting the first Christmas single in the mail. My original vinyl copy of TEN still plays great, but I don't play it as often as I'd like because I'm afraid of scratching it or damaging it. I'd like to get another copy that is sonically equal or superior to the first release (but NOT the remix) and was wondering what y'all consider the best vinyl version of TEN?

The original 1994 US pressing is the best vinyl cut. But I will say the original 1991 CD can sound as good or maybe better depending on your digital front-end.

    Absolutely, without question.

Why is that? Did the reissues not use the original tapes or something?

    Yes and Yes

Lots of people just hear the music, and don't necessarily pay attention to the dynamics. The reissues are compressed, taking away dynamics and basically just making them loud. The reissues are clear, but again lack in dynamics. If when you listen to an album and you turn it up to 3 and your like.. that's loud enough... its compressed. You should be able to turn it WAY up and then should be able to hear the instrumentation open up.

But that's just my simple explanation.

I have compared and the '94 is far superior. But like I said earlier the OG '91 CD is VERY good depending on your digital set-up. You don't necessarily need to pay the price for an original vinyl pressing for a great sounding version.

That's a good explanation.  When you get fatigued at medium volumes, it's compressed.  When it can't get loud enough for you, you've got a nice record on your hands.

YES!  I've been saying this for years. Compression can be used well, but oftentimes gets overused or used incorrectly. My 94 vinyl copy seems "soft" at lower volumes, but I'm able to crank up my system to really open it up and it sounds perfect. I have the redux version as well and don't like it nearly as much, so I usually just play the original. I just thought it was because you tend to prefer a song/album the way you first heard it and got used to listening to it, but after comparing them side by side, the original version does seem more dynamic, like you're standing in front of the band while they play (plus I don't like the remixes). My hope was to find a non-Redux version that played the same way, but it sounds like one may not exist. I guess I'll just have to make sure to take extra special care of my original album.

So, I've a question for anyone with Lost Dogs.  Is that pressing suffering from the fate of lack of attention to detail, is it compressed or is it more dynamic in the details.  Basically, I am asking because it is the one Pearl Jam vinyl that I don't currently have that I would really like, but I have a hard time paying $300+ for a record, even at 3 LPs.

But if the sound on it is done properly and the fear of miserable sounding reissue is the only next step, I would rather suck it up and get the LP original.
His eminence has yet to show.

Same camp as you.  But im sure as soon as I buy it,  it will be reissued.  And they'll both be a brick wall.

I will have to revisit Lost Dogs before I could give you a good answer. I haven't listened to it in a LONG time, so anything I would say would be based on that far memory. This gives me something to do now over the holiday break.
