Light Years

I still cant decide if this is a sad song, or a slower happy one, I used to think 'Ive fucked up my life' when I heard this, almost had me in tears sometimes, but when I hear it now I think about how much I am thankful for.

What effect does it have on you?
no matter where you go,
there you are.

  • It can be both. It does bring me to tears sometimes when I hear it, because it reminds me of those who have passed in my life...but it also has a positive effect as well. It's complex, which makes it good.

This song takes tears of sadness and hopelessness and completely transforms them. It hurts but at the same time there's this beautiful positive feeling that washes over me and makes me feel SO grateful and appreciative of every little thing. It makes me feel so alive. No other song has helped me more, no other ANYTHING really, has helped me cope with the enormous loss that I've endured and struggle with each day like this has. The comfort and healing powers of this beauty are beyond compare.

I'm not even sure I'd group it as just a happy song though...it's so beyond typical classification. It's in a like in a league all it's own imo. :) It's therapy. A song that truly, literally SAVES right here.
I hear it now I think about how much I am thankful for.

Light Years was my favourite song from Binaural when I first heard it, and it still is.

I think of a couple of people who were in my life a long time ago, when I was a little younger. It has that nice feeling of taking me back to those people.

I heard a live version from the Pink Pop Festival in 2000 on youtube, and had to download the boot to hear this. That version is a staple on my Ipod.

I love the lyrics "we were but stones, your light made us stars". Flippin fantastic. So true about some people I have known, and no longer involve myself with.

The few times live where Ed has made comments before they played it, he has dedicated the song to someone who has passed, so I'm assuming it was written in that same manner. To me, I view it as a sad song, but also a healing song.

One of my favs ever (probably 2nd or 3rd). The chorus is perfect with every single word.

I've used hammers made out of wood
I have played games with pieces and rules..
I've deciphered tricks at the bar...
But now you're gone,... I haven't figured out why...
I've come up with riddles... and jokes about war...
I've figured out numbers and what they're for...
I've understood feelings.. and I've understood words...
But how could you be taken away?...

And wherever you've gone...and wherever we might go...
It don't seem fair...today just disappeared...
Your light's reflected now,... reflected from afar...
We were but stones,... your light made us stars

    With heavy breath,... awakened regrets...
Back pages and days alone that could have been spent,
Together... but we were... miles apar...t
Every inch between us becomes light years now...
No need to be void,... or save up on life...
You got to spend it all.....

And wherever you've gone... and wherever we might go...
It don't seem fair...you seemed to like it here...
Your light's reflected now,... reflected from afar
We were but stones,... your light made us stars

And wherever you've gone... and wherever we might go...
It don't seem fair...today just disappeared...
Your light's reflected now,... reflected from afar...
We were but stones,... your light made us stars
"Don't let the darkness eat you up..."

    "We were but stones...
    Your light made us stars."

One of their best lines ever. Simple and quite beautifull.
It's probably their best song about coping with the loss of someone dear. "Sad", "Other Side", "Man of the Hour" and "Come back" are beautifull followers to the theme.
It's a healing song and I love it.
