Pearl Jam college course

Do you have to be a professor to teach a college course? My dream job would be to teach a class about the only thing that i am really passionate about, besides my kids :), pearl jam..the lyrics are intense and meaningful. They should be broken down, line for line, word for word,
just a suggestion.

  • I'd take your class if you get the job by next semester or the one after (I graduate after the next two so hurry up!).
  • That would be an awesome class! I always wanted to take a modern music class, something like School of Rock. I had a teacher in college (it was an english class) that had us come up with any ten song lyrics and explain why they were important to us. I always thought that was a cool assigment.

While I wouldn't teach it like that I think it would be quite simple to teach a course involving Pearl Jam and the contemporary moment. They have been at the forefront of music/environment/politics for over a 15 year time span...it could be pretty good.

That would be an interesting class - I was thinking it could be the lyrics, but then I was thinking it could be a particular album, then I was thinking it could be the evolution over a period of time for a successful rock band. There's so many ways to discuss Pearl Jam, but I think it would need to be structured. I like the lights out and write what you think class as referenced above.

  • I'm a high school history teacher and I teach a 12th grade course called Constitutional Issues. I found a way to incorporate Pearl Jam into my class with an activity I call Free Speech Friday. Every Friday a student brings in lyrics to a song and I put them on the overhead while we listen to the song. We then talk about why that song is important to the student and we discuss the meaning of the song. Of course when I introduce the activity I bring in a Pearl Jam song. Since I started it I have brought in Alive, Release, Nothingman, Betterman, and a few others. The students love it and it gives me an excuse to listen to PJ in the classroom. Not quite a college course, but it's a start. Plus I have introduced PJ to some students who have actually gotten interested in the band because of me. I'm just trying to do my part to turn the youth of today onto some good music other than the crap they hear on the radio.

You could also bring up the fact that PJ spearheaded an antitrust suit against Ticketmaster. That solidified my loyalty:D

  • I teach college writing (the class is mostly freshmen) and we're doing a section called "reading and writing about music." I brought in DTE. First, we just listened to the song, then listened to the song while reading along with the lyrics, then we watched the video. I loved it! Of course, I'm sitting there moving my head, hands, feet, while most of them just sat there (sad). The point was to see how interpretations changed with each new aspect. Only about 5 students out of 30 had ever heard it, and when I asked for thier gut reactions a kid said it was "loud and obnoxious," while another girl said, "With Pearl Jam its more of a feeling that meaning." I was pretty shocked with both of those. In the end though, it was great. The video really offered a new demension that they responded to.

It could be made into a college major. Different levels of Pearl Jam knowledge.

Start with the basics and work your way up to understanding meaning behind the lyrics.

We could just simply set up a PJ school...I'll sign up for work!! Dont think I can be a teacher for another 40 years...but on a PJ school..EASY :)

Most colleges require professors to have a PHD, I remember my last year at Stanford there were some students who drew up a petition to implement a class that discussed the lyrics and poetry of Jim Morrison. They got over 1,500 signatures, but it was turned down by the academic committee. I've heard of several other colleges though having courses such as "Sports Agent 101", and even "Gambling 101". If there was any justification for a band to be the subject of, it would be PJ. Their song catalog is so wide and addresses so many human events. I guess until it does happen, we have the forum to serve as our classroom.
