I've always wondered if Ed got the idea for this song while sitting in a small town diner or something somewhere while a reunion was taking place between one of the workers and an old friend. Or maybe he just noticed some strange looks and body language from one person to another, and that inspired him to come up with the scenario in the song. Maybe he was the other person.
What do you think?
Has this been talked about & answered already?

I think its about when he comes back to atlanta in 2040 and stops in at the local bank. : ) /\__/\
Are you saying he wrote a song about a premonition of going into an Atlanta bank when he's around 75?
I agree with Indifferent.
It's probably much deeper than that.
I think I'm glad I'm not inside.
Um, Yeeeees. There are obviously deeper meanings in the actual song.
However, that doesn't mean that it couldn't have been inspired by an actual event, and I just took up a curiousity on what that event might be. It could be something interesting.
Also, one interpretation of the song is of an empathic view of another's perspective (on one level). I think that he does try to put himself behind others' eyes in some songs, and that is one thing that I like about them.
there's a small town in the Santa Cruz mountains called Boulder Creek ... I always pictured the song to be about this particular small town...

And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky....
Say, are you Candace?
