Immortality

What a great song.
I'm speechless.

there is something very special about it. The harmony flots very well, in a kind of mysterious way. very special.
and the words just float along with the music.
i can not really explain it in words.
can anyone?

"some die just to live..."

what do you think about it?
Good-bye for now.

  • When i think of this song, to me it kind of sums up pear jam, the sound, the feeling, the image it gives you when you listen to it. It is also the type of song i strive to write when i'm playing my own music.

Always thought it was about Kurt Cobain's suicide and how he achieved immortality- "cigar box". I think Eddie felt drawn to the temptation of suicide and the immortality that comes along with it. "I wish to hold on but there's a trapdoor in the sun". Just a thought...

  • One of the most special pearl jam's songs.... I can't explain what it mean to me in english 'cause I don't have enough vocabulary to define what I feel for it =/

I used the lyrics of 'Immortality' for a paper about Beowulf, and how "some die just to live." Ah, God. I'm such a nerd.
drivingrl: "Will I ever get to meet Gwen Stefani?"
kevinbeetle: "Yes. When her career washes up and her and Gavin move to Galveston, you will meet her at Hot Topic shopping for a Japanese cheerleader outfit.

    Next!"

I think of two people when I heard this song Kurt and some guy they call Jesus. I'm not at all religious and I'm not really sure about Ed's religious beliefs but I get the feeling he's linking the two people together. Ok, Jesus didn't play guitar (to my knowledge), but both of these people are huge role models in their own right, have shaped the future and were a voice for many. Both are dead but live on in many people's everyday lives in different ways. The lyrics speak for themselves.

I go into a trance sometimes when I listen to Immortality. The music, the words, they're so overwhelming. The music seems to just push into my soul and release it. I guess this doesn't do much good when I'm driving, but oh well. All of PJ's music does this to me, but especially this song.

I knew somebody would mention Kurt Cobain in this thread. Eddie has said numerous times that 'Immortality' is not about Kurt Cobain.

And it's not "I wish to hold on", it's "A wish to hold on to".

Hate to burst your eddie bubble ... but eddie lied. The "cigar box on the floor" is too direct a reference not to be a reference to Kurt's death.

Probably, the song didn't neccesarily start off as a song about Kurt. In fact, the song might have been started before Kurt offed himself ... but by the time it showed up on Vitalogy, Kurt's suicide was definitely a part of it.

To me, that song is about: "See, what I mean? See what this business can do to people? It can make them immortal ... but at what cost?"

    vacate is the word
vengeance has no place on me or her...
