Long Road

I've been listening to it repeatedly lately and was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about the song - what it's about and such, AND if anyone has the lyrics around somewhere.

If you can listen to the San Diego bootleg. I still have not downloaded this one but Eddie was telling the story about this song became when he heard that one of the teachers that had a huge impact on his life had died they were doing mirrorball with Uncle Neil. Eddie had to leave the room as he was geting emotional wnet to a room and sat there for a while, picked up a gutair then hit the first cord he said that was a bell for this teacher and he did it again. He sat there just ringing the bell after a while the rest of the guys came in and did not say anything but just joined in.

This is my best recolection of the story. Awesome song live in San Diego glad I got to hear it.
Arms wide open with the sea as my floor.
  • Yeah I heard it live in Detroit and it blew my mind, it's such a beautiful melancholy song.

Thank you so much for the info, it's weird - I can totally relate to Eddie as one of my favorite teachers in highschool died of a heart attack - I felt horrible because I had skipped school that day and people actually called me at home to tell me he had dropped dead while teaching. Shortly after that, another favorite got into a car crash and was in a coma for weeks. It was a very very rough time for me. The second one lived, thank god, but he was never the same person. And neither was I, really. Those things change your perspective so much, and now I've got a whole new perspective on the song.

    Thank you.

    I wished for so long...
    I cannot stay
    All the precious moments...
    Cannot stay
Its not like wings have fallen...
    I cannot say
    Still something is missing...
    I cannot say

Holding hands of daughters and sons
In their phase theyre falling down
    Down, down, down

I have wished for so long...
How I wish for you again

Will I walk the long road?
    I cannot stay
Theres no need to say goodbye

    Oh, the friends and family...
    All the memories going round
    Round, round round...

I have wished for so long...
How I wished for you today

    And the wind keeps rollin
And the sky keeps turning grey
    And the sun is set
The sun will rise another day

I have wished for so long...
How I wish for you today

I have wished for so long...
How I wish for you today
Will I walk the long road?
We all walk the long road
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

I second this one! I was at San Diego and it by far rocked the show and set up an amazing first encore. Ed did replace a few lyrics:

    "And the sun is setting
the sun will rise another day"

    was replaced by

"I know that you're with me
I know you're in here today"

He mentioned his teacher again after Elderly Woman. The whole night fucking rocked!

    I wish I had been there. :( :)
  • I never heard the studio version, only various live versions and they all have been amazing. It truly is a beautiful song and it is great to finally know the meaning behind it.

    What a phenomenal opener.
Oh he fills it up with the love of a girl...

Just shows to go ya that your frame of mind when listening to a song, especially a PJ song, really shapes your interpretation of it.

I thought the song was about lost love. When that is all you think about, lots of songs end up that way.

If you can find it, get the version that Neil Young did with them for the 9/11 telethon show. It is very good.
